CHAPTER 5: THE VAULT THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN OPENED

The police surrounded William Hartwell.

Yet somehow...

He was smiling.

Not the smile of a guilty man.

The smile of someone who knew the worst truth had not yet been discovered.

"You think you've won?" William laughed.

"You've only uncovered the first lie."

Detectives immediately escorted him away in handcuffs, but before entering the police car, he turned toward Adrian.

"The key..."

"...is inside your father's office."

Adrian froze.

"My father?"

William nodded.

"Open the vault."

"But once you do..."

"You'll wish this wedding had never happened."

Three hours later...

Adrian, Isabella, Eleanor, the detectives, and the old maid arrived at the abandoned law office of Adrian's late father.

Hidden behind an enormous bookshelf was a biometric vault no one knew existed.

Inside...

There was no money.

No gold.

No secret bank accounts.

Only shelves filled with hundreds of children's files.

Every folder carried a photograph.

Every child had a different name.

Every child had disappeared decades ago.

The detective's face turned pale.

"Oh my God..."

"This wasn't one kidnapping."

"It was an entire network."

Eleanor could barely breathe.

"What kind of monster creates files like these?"

Then Adrian found a leather journal with his father's initials burned into the cover.

As he opened it, a folded letter slipped onto the floor.

It was addressed to him.

"To my son, Adrian..."

His hands shook as he began reading aloud.

"If you're reading this, William has finally fallen."

"But he was never the leader."

Everyone stared in disbelief.

The journal revealed that wealthy families across the country had secretly paid millions to exchange children after accidents, fires, and hospital births.

Heirs were replaced.

Bloodlines rewritten.

Entire fortunes protected by stolen identities.

The Hartwell family had only been one piece of a much larger empire.

Then Adrian reached the final page.

His breathing stopped.

"No..."

"It can't be..."

Isabella grabbed the journal.

"What?"

Adrian slowly looked into her eyes.

"My father wrote one last sentence."

The room became deathly silent.

He whispered the words no one was prepared to hear.

"The girl known as Isabella Hartwell..."

"...was never the missing Hartwell daughter."

Everyone froze.

Even Eleanor.

The detective slowly asked,

"Then..."

"Who is she?"

At that exact moment, a hidden compartment inside the vault clicked open by itself.

Inside lay a newborn hospital bracelet.

One tiny pink blanket.

And a DNA report sealed twenty-three years earlier.

Across the top, stamped in bold red letters, were the words:

CONFIDENTIAL — CHILD OF SUBJECT X

Below it...

Instead of a mother's name...

There was only one chilling title.

"PROJECT PHOENIX."

The detective whispered,

"This wasn't a family secret..."

"It was an experiment."

And suddenly, everyone realized they had been asking the wrong question all along.

The mystery was no longer who Isabella's parents were...

The real question was—

Who created her?
