CHAPTER 7: SHE REMEMBERED THE FACE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The explosion ripped through the lower floors.

Glass shattered.

Steel beams groaned.

The emergency lights flickered to life, bathing the underground vault in blood-red light.

Smoke swallowed the room.

"Everybody move!" the detective shouted.

But the vault door refused to open.

Someone had locked them inside.

Adrian grabbed a fire extinguisher and smashed the control panel.

Nothing.

The electronic lock remained sealed.

Outside...

Heavy footsteps echoed through the hallway.

Not one person.

Several.

They weren't rescuers.

They were coming to finish what had started twenty-three years earlier.

The old maid clutched Isabella's hand.

"They found us."

"They always find the witnesses."

A deafening gunshot echoed outside the vault.

Then another.

Silence.

The detective slowly lowered his weapon.

"They've already killed the officers upstairs."

Suddenly...

Isabella dropped to her knees.

A sharp pain exploded inside her head.

Fragments of memories flooded back like a broken dam.

A laboratory.

Bright white lights.

A woman singing the same lullaby from the music box.

A man carrying her through smoke.

And then...

One face.

A man with a snake tattoo on his wrist.

He wasn't William.

He wasn't a scientist.

He was giving orders.

Even William obeyed him.

Isabella gasped.

"I remember him..."

Everyone turned.

"He wasn't working for Project Phoenix..."

"He owned it."

At that exact moment, the vault lights switched on by themselves.

A hidden wall slowly slid open.

Behind it was a private elevator no one had noticed before.

The doors opened silently.

Inside stood a man wearing a perfectly tailored black suit.

Gray hair.

Calm eyes.

White gloves.

He looked no older than sixty.

Yet there was something terrifyingly familiar about him.

He smiled at Isabella.

"Welcome home."

The detective immediately pointed his gun.

"Don't move!"

The stranger didn't even blink.

"My name no longer matters."

"But twenty-three years ago..."

"They called me Director Zero."

Every heartbeat in the room seemed to stop.

The old maid whispered in horror.

"No..."

"I watched you die."

Director Zero smiled.

"That was the man you wanted to believe was me."

He slowly removed his right glove.

On his wrist...

The same black snake tattoo Isabella had remembered.

William Hartwell had never been the mastermind.

He had been an employee.

Director Zero calmly looked around the room.

"I've spent twenty-three years searching for Subject X."

His eyes settled on Isabella.

"And now..."

"My daughter has finally come home."

Adrian stepped in front of Isabella.

"She's not your daughter."

Director Zero laughed softly.

"Oh, Adrian..."

"You still haven't read the last page of your father's journal."

He tossed a sealed envelope onto the floor.

Adrian opened it with trembling hands.

His face instantly lost all color.

Isabella grabbed the letter.

At the bottom was a single handwritten sentence from Adrian's father:

"If Director Zero ever finds Isabella... don't tell her the truth."

Below that...

One final line.

"Because Adrian... you were never sent to marry her by accident."

Adrian froze.

The envelope slipped from his hands.

Tears filled his eyes as he whispered...

"I've known about Project Phoenix..."

"...since I was twelve years old."

Isabella stared at the man she loved.

The man who had sworn to protect her.

May you like

The man who had just confessed...

He had been watching her all along.
