Chapter 5: The Mother Who Lied for Twenty-Three Years

The old woman standing in the doorway looked nothing like the mother Emily remembered.
Her hair had turned completely gray.
Her hands trembled as she clutched a weathered hospital file against her chest.
"Emily..."
Tears streamed down her face.
Emily stood frozen.
"Mom... I buried you three years ago."
The woman nodded slowly.
"You buried the woman I pretended to be."
The room erupted in confusion.
William stepped forward.
"Sarah... where have you been?"
Sarah lowered her eyes.
"I never kidnapped Emily."
Silence.
Everyone stared at her.
She opened the old hospital file and placed faded photographs across the table.
One showed the hospital engulfed in flames.
Another showed a masked man carrying a baby.
The final picture revealed a man in an expensive suit speaking to two security guards only minutes before the fire.
William's face drained of color.
He recognized him immediately.
Richard Sterling.
His own younger brother.
Sarah's voice cracked.
"The police blamed me because I was the last nurse holding your daughter."
"I tried to tell them Richard took her."
"But he owned half the city."
"No one believed me."
Emily's heartbeat thundered in her ears.
Sarah continued.
"I escaped with you because Richard promised to kill you if I ever returned."
"I changed our names."
"I lived as a fugitive."
"I let the world think I had stolen you..."
"So you could stay alive."
Emily collapsed into her mother's arms.
For twenty-three years...
She had hated the woman who had actually sacrificed everything to save her.
Across the room, William clenched his fists so tightly they bled.
"My own brother..."
Then the mansion doors burst open.
A black SUV pulled into the driveway.
A lawyer hurried inside.
"Mr. Sterling..."
"Richard is dead."
The room froze.

"But before he died..."
"He left behind a video addressed to Emily."
