Chapter 2 - The Contract of Silence

Facebook Hook: "A billionaire's mother offered her $100,000 to disappear. Then she saw the locket."The rain was pouring in sheets outside the service entrance of the Hawthorne Grand. Naomi held Lily tightly under a leaking awning, both of them shivering. Within ten minutes of the incident, Naomi had been fired, her final paycheck withheld for "damages to hotel reputation."
"I'm sorry, Mommy," Lily sobbed, her tears mixing with the rain. "I just wanted to touch it once."
"Shh, it's okay, baby. It's not your fault," Naomi whispered, though despair clawed at her throat. Rent was due tomorrow. They had eighty dollars left in the world.
Inside the warmth of the hotel, a different storm was raging.
In the private VIP holding room, Evelyn Hale threw a glass of champagne against the wall. “How dare you let that gutter rat touch that piano, Preston! On your twenty-first birthday! Do you know how many journalists are in that room?”
Preston didn't hear her. He was staring at the silver locket in his palm. It was old, tarnished, but the engraving was unmistakable: the Hale family phoenix. There was only one person this could have belonged to. His late uncle, Julian Hale—the musical genius of the family who had mysteriously "committed suicide" twenty years ago.
"Mother," Preston said, his voice deadly calm. "Who was that woman? The mother?"
Evelyn’s face paled for a fraction of a second before hardening into stone. "A nobody. A kitchen maid. And you will forget about them."
But Evelyn didn't forget. An hour later, she tracked Naomi down to their cramped, damp apartment in the slums of South Boston.
When Naomi opened the door, she froze. Evelyn stood there, flanked by two massive bodyguards, looking like a queen visiting a prison.
"Let’s skip the pleasantries," Evelyn said, walking into the tiny room and tossing a thick manila envelope onto the unstable wooden table. "There is $100,000 in cash in that envelope. More money than you will see in a lifetime."
Naomi stared at the envelope, her heart hammering. "What do you want?"
"You take your daughter, you pack your bags, and you leave Boston tonight," Evelyn demanded cold-bloodedly. "If I ever see her near a piano, or near my son again, I will ensure you spend the next ten years in a state penitentiary for theft. I have the power to make it happen."

The Choice: Naomi looked at the money that could save her daughter’s life, then at Lily sleeping soundly under a thin blanket.
The Chapter 2 Cliffhanger: Naomi reached for the envelope, but as she did, the door burst open. Preston stood in the doorway, drenched in rain, holding the silver locket up high. "She can't leave, Mother," Preston said, his voice shaking with a terrifying revelation. "Because Lily isn't just a maid's daughter. Look at the DNA record inside this locket. She’s Julian’s daughter. She’s a Hale."
