Chapter 4 - The Unmasking

Facebook Hook: "The custody battle of the century! But the judge didn't expect the witness who walked through the door."Three weeks later, the Boston Family Court was a media circus. Paparazzi lined the streets, their flashes blinding Naomi and Lily as they walked up the stone steps, accompanied only by Preston, who had been completely cut off from his family fortune for taking their side.

Inside the courtroom, Evelyn Hale sat surrounded by the city's most expensive legal team.

"Your Honor," Evelyn’s lead attorney argued smoothly, "we are simply looking out for the welfare of the child. The mother, Naomi Hart, is currently unemployed, living in squalor, and exploiting a minor for internet fame. The child exhibits signs of obsessive savant syndrome and needs professional, institutionalized care."

The judge, an elderly man with a stern face, looked down at Lily, who was sitting quietly, holding a worn-out teddy bear. "Ms. Hart, what do you have to say to these claims?"

Naomi stood up, her voice trembling but resolute. "I may be poor, Your Honor, but my daughter is loved. She isn't sick. She's gifted. And Mrs. Hale doesn't want to save her—she wants to silence her."

"A beautiful speech," Evelyn’s lawyer countered smirkly. "But genius without training is just noise. The child cannot even read sheet music. She is a parlor trick. She doesn't belong in the legacy of Julian Hale."

Preston stood up from the gallery. "Then let her prove it. Right here. Right now."

The courtroom erupted into whispers. Preston had arranged for a digital keyboard to be brought into the courtroom.

The judge banged his gavel. "Silence! I will allow it. Let the child play. If she shows no extraordinary ability, I will grant temporary custody to the Hale Foundation for medical evaluation."

Lily looked at Naomi, panic in her wide eyes. Naomi knelt down, kissing her forehead. "Just like in the kitchen, Lily. Close your eyes and follow the rain."
