CHAPTER 10 — THE TWO HALVES OF THE TRUTH

General Whitaker's face disappeared from every screen.

The command room fell into complete silence.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Colonel Richard Vance slowly placed both hands on the conference table.

"For twenty-four years," he said quietly, "we've been hunting the wrong man."

He looked at Maya.

"The Chairman was never hiding."

"He was standing beside us."

Maya lowered her eyes to the silver pendant in her hand.

Whitaker's final words echoed in her mind.

"Yours was only half of the key."

"What does that mean?" she asked.

Eleanor Brooks reached for the pendant and turned it over.

"There was always a rumor," she whispered.

"Your parents created something before Black Summit."

"Not money."

"Not weapons."

"Evidence."

"The kind of evidence that could destroy an entire network of corrupt officials."

"They knew one person could never keep it safe."

"So they divided the access key into two pieces."

She held Maya's pendant beside an enlarged image of the one Whitaker had displayed.

The shapes matched perfectly.

Together, they formed a complete military insignia.

But something unexpected happened.

A tiny compartment inside Maya's pendant clicked open.

A paper-thin microfilm slipped onto the table.

Every investigator stared.

Vance carefully picked it up with gloved hands.

"It's genuine."

Within minutes, technicians projected the contents onto a large screen.

A hidden map appeared.

No names.

No explanations.

Just a set of coordinates deep in the Rocky Mountains.

Below them were six handwritten words.

THE TRUTH WAS NEVER DESTROYED.

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.

"I know that place."

"It wasn't a military base."

"It was your parents' emergency archive."

Before anyone could speak, another analyst rushed into the room.

"Colonel!"

"We've identified Whitaker's escape helicopter."

"He's heading toward the same coordinates."

Vance didn't hesitate.

"Prepare every aircraft we have."

"We leave immediately."

At sunrise, three military helicopters flew low through the mountain valleys.

Below them, hidden among towering pines, lay an abandoned Cold War bunker.

Whitaker's helicopter was already there.

Smoke drifted from its engines.

"He beat us," one pilot muttered.

Agents surrounded the entrance.

The massive steel doors stood open.

Inside...

Everything was untouched.

Old computers.

Dust-covered filing cabinets.

Rows of sealed storage crates.

It looked as though time had stopped twenty-four years earlier.

Then Maya noticed something on the far wall.

A family photograph.

Her parents.

A little girl.

An infant boy.

And another man standing beside them.

Not Whitaker.

Not Victoria's husband.

Not Colonel Vance.

No one recognized him.

Across the bottom, her father had written:

"Trust only Daniel Cross."

Colonel Vance frowned.

"I've never heard that name."

Eleanor looked confused.

"He wasn't listed in any military file."

An agent suddenly called from the back of the bunker.

"Colonel... you need to see this."

Everyone hurried into the archive room.

Hundreds of classified files lined the shelves.

None had been opened.

In the center stood a single chair.

Still warm.

Whitaker had been there only minutes earlier.

On the chair rested an envelope addressed in neat handwriting.

For Maya.

With trembling hands, she opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My dear Maya,

If you are reading this, then I have failed to keep you away from the truth.

Your parents were never traitors.

Neither was I.

The real enemy was someone we all trusted.

I became the villain because it was the only way to keep you alive.

When you discover who truly ordered Black Summit... you will understand why I disappeared.

Do not believe everything they tell you about me.

And whatever you do...

Do not look for Daniel Cross until you are ready to lose everything.

Maya's hands trembled.

The room was silent.

For the first time, even Colonel Vance questioned everything he believed.

Was Whitaker truly the mastermind?

Or had someone manipulated the entire investigation from the very beginning?

Just then, a young forensic analyst rushed into the bunker holding a satellite phone.

"Colonel!"

"You need to hear this."

Vance answered.

His expression changed instantly.

"What is it?" Maya asked.

He lowered the phone slowly.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"The DNA laboratory just finished comparing every sample recovered from Black Summit."

He looked directly at Maya.

"Your mother's DNA..."

"...doesn't match yours."

The words struck like lightning.

Maya stared at him in disbelief.

"What are you saying?"

Vance swallowed hard.

"I'm saying the woman who raised you..."

"...may not have been your biological mother."

The pendant.

The missing child.

The hidden archive.

Whitaker's confession.

Daniel Cross.

And now...

An entirely new mystery.

As the mountain wind swept through the open bunker doors, Maya realized that everything she had fought to uncover had only revealed one terrifying truth.

The story she had believed for twenty-four years wasn't merely incomplete.

May you like

It had been carefully written for her.

THE END... OR JUST THE BEGINNING?
