CHAPTER 3 — THE MAN WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEAD

"No..."

Ethan whispered.

"That's impossible."

He grabbed the photograph with trembling hands.

The face staring back at him wasn't just familiar.

It was his own.

The same eyes.

The same jawline.

The same crooked smile.

Only the military uniform and the date—twenty-four years earlier—made no sense.

Victoria rushed forward.

"Give me that!"

She snatched at the file, but Colonel Vance intercepted her with one arm.

"Do not touch classified evidence."

General Whitaker studied Ethan carefully.

"What is your full legal name?"

"Ethan Sterling-Vaughn."

"Birth date?"

"October 14..."

Whitaker slowly nodded.

"As I feared."

He turned to Maya.

"Your husband has been living under a name that was never his."

The room erupted.

"What?"

"How?"

"This can't be real!"

Whitaker opened another file.

"Twenty-four years ago, after the Black Summit attack, two unidentified children vanished."

"One was a little girl."

"One was an infant boy rescued from another vehicle during the same operation."

"The boy had severe head injuries."

"No identification."

"He was secretly placed with a wealthy family that agreed to raise him under a new identity."

Victoria's face turned white.

Her breathing became uneven.

"No..."

she whispered.

Whitaker looked directly at her.

"You and your late husband adopted that infant."

"You were ordered never to reveal where he came from."

Victoria began crying.

"I... I signed confidentiality papers."

"They said it was for national security."

"I never knew..."

She looked at Ethan.

"I never knew you weren't ours by blood."

Ethan staggered backward.

Everything he believed about his life shattered in seconds.

He wasn't born a Sterling.

He wasn't heir to the Sterling fortune.

He had unknowingly married the very woman connected to the mystery that had haunted the government for decades.

Maya stared at him through tears.

"So..."

"We're not strangers."

Whitaker nodded slowly.

"No."

"You and Ethan were the last two children recovered from the Black Summit operation."

"You grew up believing completely different stories."

"Fate brought you back together."

The ballroom stood in stunned silence.

Then Colonel Vance cleared his throat.

"There is one final problem."

Everyone looked at him.

"We reopened the Black Summit investigation three months ago."

He placed several new photographs on the table.

Satellite images.

Financial records.

Security footage.

"There is overwhelming evidence that the convoy was never attacked by foreign enemies."

"It was betrayed."

The room grew cold.

"By whom?" Maya asked quietly.

Vance's expression hardened.

"The traitor was never identified."

He slowly turned one final photograph toward the crowd.

The image showed a much younger businessman secretly meeting with unknown military officials just days before the convoy disappeared.

Victoria gasped so violently she nearly collapsed.

Because the businessman in the picture...

Was her late husband.

The respected founder of the Sterling family empire.

The man everyone had celebrated for decades.

The hero.

The philanthropist.

The legend.

General Whitaker closed the file.

"The greatest betrayal in modern military history..."

"...may have built the fortune your family still enjoys today."

Maya looked at Victoria.

Victoria looked at the floor.

For the first time in her privileged life...

The richest woman in the room had absolutely nothing to say.

And outside the locked ballroom...

May you like

Federal investigators were already arriving with arrest warrants, determined to uncover whether the Sterling fortune had been built on stolen secrets, blood, and betrayal.
