CHAPTER 2 — THE FILE THEY BURIED FOR TWENTY-FOUR YEARS

Within eleven minutes, the country club was surrounded.

No sirens.

No flashing lights.

Just black SUVs arriving one after another.

Men and women in dark suits stepped out with military precision.

None of them wore badges.

Every entrance was sealed.

Every guest was asked to remain exactly where they stood.

Panic spread through the ballroom.

The mayor demanded answers.

The senator threatened lawsuits.

Nobody listened.

Colonel Vance never took his eyes off Maya.

She sat quietly in a corner, rocking Noah back to sleep, completely unaware that the entire federal response centered on her.

An elderly woman entered the ballroom.

Gray hair.

Simple navy suit.

No jewelry.

No expression.

Yet every armed agent immediately stood at attention.

Even Colonel Vance saluted.

Victoria frowned.

"And who exactly are you?"

The woman ignored her.

She stopped only inches from Maya.

For nearly a minute...

She simply looked at her.

Then tears appeared.

Real tears.

The kind no training could suppress.

"My God..."

she whispered.

"You have her mother's eyes."

Maya stared back, confused.

"I'm sorry..."

"Have we met?"

The woman slowly reached into a locked briefcase.

Inside lay dozens of classified folders marked TOP SECRET.

She opened one.

Photographs spilled across the table.

One picture showed a smiling military officer holding a tiny blonde girl wearing...

The exact same pendant.

Maya's hands began shaking.

"That's..."

she whispered.

"That's my necklace."

"No," the woman answered softly.

"It belonged to your mother."

The room froze.

Victoria's confidence disappeared.

The woman introduced herself.

"My name is Eleanor Brooks."

"I spent twenty-four years searching for you."

"I made a promise to your parents."

Another photograph appeared.

A young couple in military dress uniforms.

Decorated.

Respected.

Behind them stood the President of the United States.

"They weren't ordinary soldiers," Eleanor continued.

"Your father led one of the country's most classified intelligence divisions."

"Your mother was a cryptography specialist."

"They uncovered corruption involving powerful people."

"They were supposed to testify."

"They never made it."

Maya struggled to breathe.

"So..."

"They're dead?"

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

"We believed so."

"The convoy exploded."

"No bodies were ever identified."

"Only one child disappeared."

"You."

Across the room...

Victoria suddenly interrupted.

"This is absurd!"

"Anyone can fabricate old photographs."

"My lawyers—"

"Enough."

A booming voice echoed from the entrance.

Everyone turned.

An elderly man wearing civilian clothes entered slowly with the aid of a cane.

The entire ballroom gasped.

Even the governor stood instantly.

It was General Thomas Whitaker.

A war hero who hadn't appeared publicly in nearly six years.

He walked directly toward Maya.

Then...

Without saying a word...

The decorated four-star general removed his cap...

And saluted her.

Not as a child.

Not as a victim.

But as the daughter of two fallen American heroes.

The room watched in complete disbelief.

Victoria's knees nearly gave out.

But General Whitaker wasn't finished.

He turned toward Colonel Vance.

"Open the final file."

Vance hesitated.

"Sir..."

"It's still sealed."

"Not anymore."

The General's voice carried decades of authority.

"After tonight..."

"The truth belongs to her."

Vance unlocked the last folder.

Inside rested a single photograph.

When Maya saw it...

She screamed.

Because the man standing beside her parents...

The smiling young intelligence officer...

Looked exactly like her husband, Ethan.

Not similar.

Identical.

Twenty-four years younger.

May you like

Impossible.

Unless the impossible was only beginning.
