They were no longer living in the cramped, rundown apartment near the noisy harbor district. Instead, they had been quietly relocated to a sunlit, secure villa overlooking the gorgeous coast of Sorrento, courtesy of an anonymous "benefactor" who made sure all their expenses, education funds, and security were covered for life.
On a bright Sunday afternoon, Elena was busy in the kitchen preparing lunch when the doorbell rang.
Leo, who was playing with a brand-new soccer ball in the courtyard, sprinted eagerly to the front gate. He pulled it open, expecting the mail carrier. Instead, standing on the stone pathway was a tall, imposing man in a sharp black suit and sunglasses, holding a small wrapped package.
It wasn't Vittorio himself, but it was Rocco, his most trusted enforcer.
Rocco knelt down to the boy's eye level, offering a rare, gentle smile, and handed him the package. "Compliments from the boss, Leo. He wanted to make sure you didn't forget how to defend yourself."
Leo’s eyes widened as he ripped open the paper. Inside was a brand-new, professional-grade leather soccer ball, accompanied by a small card written in clean, elegant handwriting:
A brave soldier never stops practicing. Take care of your mother. — V.
Leo beamed, clutching the soccer ball tightly against his chest, before looking up at Rocco with absolute pride. "Tell him I'm ready for a rematch anytime."
