CHAPTER 6 – Emily Walked Out of the Shadows

A loud explosion shook the underground bunker.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Someone was breaking in.
Arthur shouted, "Take Lily and run!"
Footsteps thundered through the tunnel.
Masked men dressed in black tactical gear flooded into the chamber.
Their leader raised a pistol.
"Bring me the girl."
Daniel stepped in front of Lily.
"You'll have to kill me first."
The gun fired.
A deafening shot echoed underground.
Daniel closed his eyes...
Waiting for the pain.
But it never came.
Someone had stepped between him and the bullet.
The masked attackers froze.
Slowly, the mysterious woman lowered the smoking handgun she had used to stop them.
Her long dark hair covered part of her face.
A thin scar crossed her cheek.
Then she looked directly at Daniel.
Tears filled both their eyes.
"Emily..."
She was alive.
Older.
Stronger.
But unmistakably the woman he had loved.
Without saying a word, Emily hugged Lily tightly.
"I promised I'd come back for you."
The attackers suddenly retreated instead of fighting.
Their leader removed his mask and smiled.
"This wasn't about killing anyone."
"It was only a test."
He tossed a black envelope onto the floor.
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A family portrait.
Richard Sterling stood smiling beside two women...
And three children.
Daniel.
Victoria.
And...
Another little boy neither of them had ever seen before.
On the back of the photo, five chilling words were written in red ink.
"The true heir is still alive."
Daniel's blood ran cold.
May you like
Everything he had learned so far...
Had only been the beginning.
