CHAPTER 7 — "The Founder Was Sitting in the Courtroom"

Victor was taken away in chains.

Television stations called it the biggest child trafficking bust in American history.

People celebrated in the streets.

Parents hugged their children tighter than ever.

Dr. Ethan, Rachel, Lily, and Samuel were finally safe...

Or so they believed.

Three weeks later, Victor's trial began.

The courtroom was packed with reporters.

Federal prosecutors promised to expose everyone connected to Project Phoenix.

Victor sat quietly, smiling as if he already knew the ending.

The prosecutor stood before the jury.

"We will prove this defendant operated one of the largest criminal organizations this country has ever seen."

Victor chuckled.

"You still don't understand."

The prosecutor ignored him.

"Call your first witness."

Rachel stepped onto the stand.

She described the kidnappings.

The underground cells.

The children who never came home.

Many jurors wiped away tears.

Then the prosecutor held up the flash drive.

"This evidence identifies the real mastermind."

Every camera in the courtroom pointed toward the large monitor.

The file opened.

Everyone expected a photograph.

Instead...

A live security feed appeared.

It showed the courtroom itself.

Someone was watching them.

Then a message slowly appeared across the screen.

"LOOK AT ROW THREE."

Gasps filled the room.

Everyone turned.

Sitting quietly in the third row was an elderly man wearing a simple gray suit.

No bodyguards.

No expensive watch.

No expression.

Just another spectator.

Except...

Dr. Ethan recognized him instantly.

It was Judge Harold Bennett.

The same retired judge who had founded the children's charity twenty-five years earlier.

The same man who had attended hospital fundraisers.

The same man who had personally comforted Rachel after Lily was declared "missing."

He slowly stood up.

Then...

He smiled.

"Congratulations."

"You finally found me."

Before anyone could react—

Every courtroom door slammed shut.

The lights went out.

Emergency alarms screamed through the building.

Smoke poured from the ventilation system.

People began coughing and running in panic.

When the emergency lights finally came on...

Judge Bennett was gone.

So was Victor.

Their handcuffs lay broken on the courtroom floor.

But something far worse had happened.

Lily...

had disappeared for the third time.

On the witness stand, Rachel noticed a folded piece of paper where Lily had been sitting only moments earlier.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

Inside was a single handwritten sentence.

"Come alone if you ever want to see your daughter again... This time, the game ends where it first began."

Beneath the message was an address.

Not a warehouse.

Not a farmhouse.

It was the abandoned children's orphanage that had burned down twenty years earlier...

May you like

The very place where Project Phoenix was born.

To be continued...
