CHAPTER 8 — "The Truth Hidden Beneath the Ashes"

The old orphanage stood at the edge of the city, abandoned for twenty years.

Everyone called it the place where children disappeared.

The building was nothing but burned walls, broken windows, and memories no one wanted to remember.

But Rachel knew something.

This was where her nightmare had started.

Twenty years ago, she had worked there as a young volunteer.

She remembered the children.

She remembered the strange visitors who arrived late at night.

And she remembered the one man everyone trusted.

Judge Harold Bennett.

The man who claimed he was saving children...

Was the man who destroyed their lives.

Rachel arrived at the orphanage alone.

Just as the note demanded.

No police.

No agents.

No Ethan.

Only her.

The front door slowly opened by itself.

Inside, candles lit a path through the dark hallway.

Then a voice echoed from the shadows.

"You always were the brave one, Rachel."

Her heart stopped.

Judge Bennett stepped forward.

But he wasn't alone.

Standing beside him was Lily.

Alive.

Unharmed.

But holding something in her tiny hands.

A photograph.

Rachel rushed forward.

"Lily!"

But Bennett raised his hand.

"Stop."

Rachel froze.

"Do you know why your daughter survived when hundreds of other children didn't?"

Tears filled Rachel's eyes.

"Because she was stronger than you."

Bennett smiled.

"No."

"Because she was the first child who carried the Phoenix gene."

Rachel looked confused.

"What are you talking about?"

Bennett walked toward an old burned wall.

Behind it was a hidden room that had survived the fire.

Inside were thousands of files.

Children's names.

Medical records.

Experiments.

Photographs.

Rachel covered her mouth in horror.

Project Phoenix was never just about selling children.

It was about finding children with unusual abilities.

Children who could survive extreme conditions.

Children they could control.

And Lily...

was their biggest success.

Bennett looked at the little girl.

"She remembers everything."

Rachel shook her head.

"She's six years old. She can't remember anything from when she was a baby."

Bennett laughed.

"That's what you believed."

He handed Rachel the photograph.

Her hands began shaking.

It showed Lily as a baby...

Standing inside the orphanage.

But beside her was another person.

A person Rachel recognized immediately.

Dr. Ethan Carter.

Rachel stepped back in disbelief.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

Bennett smiled.

"Your precious doctor wasn't saving Lily."

"He was watching her."

At that moment...

A voice came from behind them.

"He's lying."

Rachel turned.

Dr. Ethan walked out of the darkness.

But he wasn't wearing his hospital coat.

He was wearing a federal agent badge.

Everyone froze.

Ethan looked at Bennett with anger in his eyes.

"Twenty years ago, I was sent undercover to destroy Project Phoenix."

Bennett laughed.

"And yet you failed."

Ethan looked at Lily.

"No..."

"I protected her."

Then Lily slowly walked toward Ethan.

She looked up at him and whispered:

"Are you the man who saved me..."

"...or the man who created me?"

The room went silent.

Because even Ethan didn't know how to answer.

Suddenly, the orphanage alarms started ringing.

Bennett smiled.

"You were all so focused on finding me..."

"You never realized I wanted you here."

The walls began shaking.

A countdown appeared on an old screen.

00:59

00:58

00:57

Rachel grabbed Lily's hand.

"What did you do?"

Bennett walked toward the exit.

"I didn't start Project Phoenix."

"I inherited it."

He looked back one final time.

"And now... the person who created it is coming home."

The countdown continued.

00:10

00:09

00:08

Then every light turned red.

A voice came through the speakers.

A voice everyone recognized.

A voice that should have been impossible.

"Hello, Rachel."

Rachel's face turned pale.

Because the voice belonged to...

Lily's real mother.

The woman everyone believed had died four years ago.
