Chapter 4 - War at the GatesAn hour later, we were speeding north through the torrential rain in Mateo's captured armored SUV. Dante drove with ruthless precision, while I tended to Sophia in the backseat, wrapping her in a warm emergency blanket from the vehicle's trunk.

The destination was a secluded, historic estate on the cliffs of the Hudson River, registered under an anonymous offshore foundation.

"Dante," I said from the back seat, watching his eyes in the rearview mirror. "What did Mateo mean when he said Gabriel wanted to 'clean up' the money?"

Dante was silent for a long mile, the wiper blades sweeping rhythmically across the windshield.

"My brother Gabriel hated the mafia," Dante finally spoke, his voice heavy with past regrets. "He wanted to turn our family’s operations entirely legitimate. He built an encrypted financial ledger—a digital key that could completely dismantle the syndicate's dark money networks and convert them into clean, legal assets. He called it 'Project Archangel'."

"And Bianca's family wanted that ledger?" I asked, piecing the puzzle together.

"The Valenti family is drowning in debt to international cartels," Dante explained. "They didn't just want a marriage alliance. Bianca was sent to spy on me, to find where Gabriel hid the master key to Archangel. And when they realized Gabriel had legally willed the entire encryption passkey to Sophia... they decided to destroy the girl and take the key."

Sophia pulled the blanket tighter around her shoulders. "Daddy gave me a necklace before he went to the hospital," she whispered, her voice trembling. "He told me never to take it off."

I looked down at Sophia’s neck. Hanging beneath her sweater was a delicate, vintage silver locket.

"It's not a locket," I realized instantly, reaching down to examine the intricate craftsmanship. I pressed a tiny hidden clasp on the side. The silver face popped open, revealing a miniature high-density quantum flash drive embedded inside the metal casing.

"Gabriel’s ledger," Dante said, glancing back through the mirror. "They weren't trying to steal her money. They were trying to steal the key to the entire Moretti empire."

Suddenly, the SUV’s dashboard screen lit up with an incoming video call.

Dante hit the speaker button.

The face that appeared on the screen wasn't Bianca. It wasn't Don Valenti.

It was Don Valenti's top enforcer, standing in the middle of a grand, marble-floored room I recognized immediately—Dante’s private penthouse in Manhattan.

Beside the enforcer stood Bianca, dressed in her blood-red designer dress, looking completely unbothered, sipping a glass of expensive champagne.

"Dante, darling," Bianca purred into the camera, her tone venomous. "Mateo failed, I see. How predictable. Men are so crude."

"Bianca," Dante said, his voice dropping into a register that made the hair on my arms stand up. "You have five minutes to leave my home before I tear your family out of New York by the roots."

"Oh, I'm not leaving, Dante," Bianca smirked, tilting her glass toward the camera. "Because while you were running around saving your pathetic little assistant and that rat of a child, my father’s men took control of every port, every club, and every lieutenant in the Moretti network. You are a king without an army."

She leaned closer to the lens, her smile turning predatory.

"Bring me the child and the key, Dante. Or by sunrise, we burn Manhattan to the ground."
