Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Twist – The Ghost of the Moretti EmpireThree months later.

The Moretti empire had been completely transformed. Under Project Archangel, the illegal operations were dismantled, and the family was now one of the most powerful, legitimate corporate conglomerates in North America.
Sophia was thriving, enrolled in a prestigious private school in Manhattan, happy, healthy, and smiling every day.
Dante and I were living in a stunning seaside villa on the coast of Long Island, far away from the dark shadows of the underworld. I was six weeks pregnant with our first child. Life was peaceful. Perfect.
Until a mysterious unmarked black envelope arrived in our private mailbox on a quiet Tuesday morning.
There was no return address. No stamp. Just my name written in elegant, gold calligraphy on the front: To Mrs. Elena Moretti.
Sitting at the granite kitchen counter with a cup of warm tea, I opened the envelope. Inside was a single, high-definition glossy photograph and a handwritten letter.
I pulled out the photograph first.
My heart instantly stopped beating. The blood drained from my face so fast my vision went blurry.
The photograph showed Sophia's father—Gabriel Moretti—standing in a sunlit villa in Tuscany, holding a recent edition of the New York Times dated yesterday.
Gabriel was supposed to have died in a car bombing four years ago. His death was the entire reason Dante had taken over the syndicate and taken custody of Sophia.
Hands trembling uncontrollably, I unfolded the handwritten letter.
Dearest Elena,
If you are reading this, then my plan worked beyond my wild expectations. You executed your role perfectly.
Did you really think it was a coincidence that you were hired as Dante’s executive assistant two years ago? Did you really think Bianca Valenti discovered that voice recording by accident?
I orchestrated the entire sequence of events. I leaked the recording to Sophia. I pushed Bianca to act. I knew Dante’s blind spot was his protective instinct for you and my daughter.
I needed someone pure, brave, and utterly loyal to force Dante to activate 'Project Archangel'. I couldn't dismantle the mob from the inside myself without getting executed by the council—so I faked my death, placed you in Dante's path, and let you drive Dante to destroy the syndicate for love.
Thank you for cleaning my family's name, Elena. Thank you for making my brother a better man.
Now that the mafia is destroyed and the assets are clean... I am coming back to New York to reclaim my daughter. And my empire.
See you very soon, sister-in-law.
— Gabriel Moretti
The letter slipped from my numb fingers, fluttering down onto the cold kitchen floor.
From the hallway behind me, I heard the heavy, comforting footsteps of my husband, Dante, walking into the kitchen, wearing a soft gray sweater, a warm smile on his handsome face.
"Good morning, beautiful," Dante said softly, leaning down to kiss the top of my head. "What's that paper on the floor?"

I looked up at Dante, my eyes wide with sheer horror, realizing that the biggest war we had ever faced wasn't against our enemies...
It was against the brother Dante had spent four years mourning.
