Chapter 2 - The Dark History

By 2:00 AM, the Blake estate was crawling with private IT forensic specialists and Adrian's legal counsel. The atmosphere was thick with tension. Adrian sat in his study, the half-burned letter lying under a magnifying lamp on his desk.

"We managed to stop the server wipe, Adrian," Marcus Vance, Adrian’s childhood friend and chief legal officer, said as he walked into the room. Marcus looked exhausted, his tie loosened. "But whoever initiated it had top-level administrative credentials. They copied over forty percent of the proprietary data before we severed the connection. If that data hits the black market, Blake International Construction faces immediate bankruptcy and federal investigation."

"It was Vanessa," Adrian said, staring blankly at the wall. "She used my login. She must have keylogged my laptop while I was away."

"It gets worse," Marcus sighed, sliding a thick manila folder across the desk. "After you called me, I had our private intelligence team dig into Vanessa’s background. The real Vanessa Vance died in a car crash in a remote village in Europe five years ago. The woman you married is a ghost. Her credentials, her degrees, her credit history—they were all fabricated or stolen."

Adrian felt a sick sensation in his stomach. He had met "Vanessa" at a charity gala for his foundation. She had been graceful, knowledgeable about architecture, and deeply empathetic about his loss. It had all been an elaborate, meticulously planned trap.

"What about Claire’s attorney?" Adrian asked, his voice cracking. "The one who sent this letter two months ago. Why didn't I receive it?"

"Arthur Pendelton," Marcus said quietly. "He died in a mysterious hit-and-run accident exactly seven weeks ago. His office was broken into the very next night. The police ruled it a burglary gone wrong, but now? It’s clear someone was erasing his files."

Adrian stood up, walking over to the family portrait on the wall. He swung it open, revealing the heavy steel safe. He punched in the combination—a date only he and Claire knew. The door clicked open. Inside, everything appeared untouched: his mother’s jewelry, the boys' birth certificates, and the deeds to his international properties.

But as he reached deeper into the safe, his fingers brushed against a small, velvet-lined compartment. It was empty.

"The flash drive," Adrian whispered, his blood turning to ice. "Claire’s final project log. The one she hid before her cancer took her. It’s gone."

Before Marcus could answer, the heavy oak doors of the study burst open. Elena stood there, pale and breathless, her hands covering her mouth.

"Mr. Blake... they're gone," she sobbed.

Adrian’s heart stopped. "Who is gone, Elena?"

"The boys," she cried, collapsing to her knees. "I just went into the guest room to check on them. The window was shattered from the outside. The security guards outside the door... they're unconscious on the floor. Noah and Liam are gone!"

THE HOOK: Running into the storm toward the guest wing, Adrian found a single object left on the broken glass of the window sill. It was Noah’s favorite teddy bear, pinned to the wood by a long, rusted iron nail. Tied to the nail was a handwritten note in red ink: “If you want to see your sons breathe again, you will deliver the rest of Claire’s inheritance to me by tomorrow noon. No police. No Marcus. Just you.”
