Chapter 4 - The Ransom and the Trap

Adrian scrambled backward, his eyes locking onto the shooter. The man slowly lowered his weapon and pulled off his tactical helmet. It wasn't one of Adrian's regular guards. It was a man with a deeply scarred face and cold blue eyes.

"Who the hell are you?" Adrian demanded, standing up, his hands raised.

"My name is Julian," the man said, his voice raspy. "I was Claire’s private investigator. For the last two years, I’ve been tracking the syndicate that killed her."

Adrian froze. "What did you just say? Claire died of cancer."

"Claire was systematically poisoned, Mr. Blake," Julian said, stepping over Marcus’s groaning, wounded body. "The cancer diagnosis was real, but the rapid decline? The sudden organ failure? It was induced by a highly sophisticated, untraceable chemical compound. Claire figured it out during her final weeks. She knew Marcus and Vanessa’s organization were targeting your family’s vast offshore wealth. She hired me to find the proof, but they killed her before we could secure it."

Adrian felt the world spinning around him. The grief he had carried for three years suddenly transformed into a white-hot, vengeful rage. His wife hadn't just died; she had been murdered by the people closest to him.

"Where are my sons?" Adrian growled, his fists shaking.

"Vanessa is holding them at the old, abandoned shipping yard on the north side of the river," Julian explained, pulling out a digital tablet. "Marcus was supposed to bring you there with the signed liquidation documents. Now that Marcus is neutralized, we have to change the plan. Vanessa is unstable, Adrian. If she realizes the plan is failing, she will blow up the entire facility with your children inside."

Adrian looked down at Marcus, who was clutching his bleeding shoulder, laughing weakly. "You're too late, Adrian..." Marcus wheezed. "The detonators are tied to a cellular timer. If Vanessa doesn't enter her code every thirty minutes, the warehouse goes up. You can't rescue them by force."

Adrian knelt down, grabbing Marcus by his collar, dragging his face inches from his own. "Then I won't use force. I’ll give her exactly what she wants."

Adrian looked up at Julian. "Get my private jet ready, and get me the physical copies of the trust documents. We are going to that warehouse. But we’re not going alone."

THE HOOK: Arriving at the dark, rain-swept shipping yard thirty minutes later, Adrian stepped out of his SUV alone, holding a heavy leather briefcase. As he walked into the towering, empty warehouse, the floodlights suddenly blinded him. High above on a metal gantry crane, two small cages were suspended over the dark, turbulent river below. Inside the cages were Noah and Liam. Standing on the control platform with the remote detonator in her hand was Vanessa—but she wasn't alone. Standing right beside her, holding a gun to the children’s cage, was someone Adrian thought was dead for three years: Claire.
