Chapter 3 - The Kidnapping

The rain poured relentlessly, washing away any physical tracks the kidnappers might have left in the estate's courtyard. Adrian stood in the empty bedroom, holding his son's ruined toy, his mind racing through a nightmare he couldn't wake up from.

"Adrian, we have to call the FBI," Marcus insisted, gripping Adrian’s shoulder. "This is a federal kidnapping case. They have the resources to track her."

"No!" Adrian shouted, turning around with raw fury in his eyes. "You heard what she said before she left. She has the data to ruin the company, and now she has my sons. If she sees a single police cruiser, she will kill them. I know how these people operate. She isn't working alone."

"What do you mean?"

"To bypass my estate security, knock out two trained guards, and extract two children in under ten minutes requires inside knowledge," Adrian said, his eyes narrowing as a terrifying realization struck him. He walked out of the room and straight toward the security command center in the basement.

The head of security, a man named Henderson who had worked for Adrian for eight years, was frantically reviewing the camera feeds. "The cameras were looped, Mr. Blake," Henderson explained, his hands sweating on the keyboard. "A pre-recorded feed of an empty hallway was played into the monitors for a twelve-minute window. By the time the system reset, the perpetrators were already gone."

Adrian leaned over Henderson’s shoulder, staring at the digital timestamp of the loop. "Who had access to the security override codes this week, Henderson?"

"Only myself, you, and..." Henderson paused, his face draining of color. "...and Mr. Vance."

Adrian slowly turned around to look at Marcus, who had followed him into the room. Marcus looked confused, then offended. "Adrian, you can't possibly think I have anything to do with this! I've been with you since we were kids!"

"Then explain why the encryption key used to loop the cameras matches the digital signature of the corporate laptop I issued to you last month," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register.

Marcus took a step back, his eyes darting toward the exit. "Adrian, listen to me. I was set up. Vanessa... she must have accessed my laptop when she came to the office last week!"

"Or," Adrian said, stepping forward, "you’ve been helping her from the very beginning. You were the one who introduced me to her at the gala, Marcus. You were the one who handled Claire’s estate distribution. You were the one who told me Arthur Pendelton died in an accident."

Realizing his cover was blown, Marcus’s expression instantly hardened. The worried friend vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating associate. He reached into his jacket, pulling out a compact silenced pistol, aiming it directly at Adrian’s chest.

"You always were too smart for your own good, Adrian," Marcus sneered. "But you’re too late. The boys are already on their way to the docks. Vanessa has everything she needs, except your final signature on the trust liquidation documents."

THE HOOK: Before Marcus could pull the trigger, the lights in the security room abruptly cut out. A deafening gunshot echoed through the darkness, followed by the sound of a heavy body crashing to the floor. When the emergency backup lights flickered on three seconds later, Marcus was lying in a pool of blood—but he hadn't been shot by Adrian. A shadowy figure stood in the doorway, holding a smoking gun, wearing the uniform of Adrian’s own private security.
