Chapter 5 - The Showdown at the Shipping Yard

Adrian gasped, the leather briefcase slipping slightly in his grip. His eyes stretched wide as he stared at the woman standing next to Vanessa. The facial structure, the long dark hair, the posture—it was Claire. The woman he had buried, the mother of his children.

"Claire...?" Adrian choked out, taking an involuntary step forward. "How... how is this possible? I saw you pass away. I held your hand!"

The woman laughed, a harsh, mocking sound that carried no warmth, completely unlike the gentle soul Adrian remembered. She raised her weapon, pointing it directly down at Adrian.

"You really are a fool, Adrian," the woman called out. "You loved my sister so much that you couldn't even tell us apart."

The fog in Adrian’s mind suddenly cleared. "Veronica," he whispered, horror washing over him.

Claire had a twin sister, Veronica, who had been estranged from the family for over a decade, institutionalized after a series of violent, fraudulent activities abroad. The family had been told she died in an asylum overseas years ago.

"Claire got everything," Veronica screamed down from the gantry, her face contorting with years of buried envy. "The money, the beautiful estate, the perfect husband, the beautiful children! While I was left to rot! Vanessa and Marcus found me. They realized that with Claire’s DNA and my face, we could easily claim the offshore trusts that Claire locked away before she died."

"The flash drive," Adrian said, trying to keep his voice steady while keeping his eyes on the cages holding his sons. Noah and Liam were crying quietly, terrified to move. "The flash drive you stole from my safe. It contains the biometric keys to Claire’s private offshore fund."

"Smart boy," Vanessa shouted, stepping forward, the remote detonator flashing a steady green light. "But the biometric keys require a secondary authorization—your physical signature and a retinal scan. Drop the briefcase, Adrian. Walk to the center of the floor, let us take the scan, and sign the transfer documents. Do it, or I press this button and drop your precious twins into the freezing river."

Adrian looked up at his sons. Noah looked back down at him, his small voice cutting through the sound of the wind. "Don't do it, Daddy! She’s going to hurt you anyway!"

Adrian took a deep breath. He knew they would never let him or the boys leave this warehouse alive. They needed his death to look like a tragic murder-suicide fueled by corporate ruin.

"Alright!" Adrian called out, throwing the briefcase onto the concrete floor. "I’ll do it. Just lower the cages first. Let the boys go, and I will give you everything."

Vanessa smiled triumphantly. "Sign the papers first."

Adrian walked toward the briefcase, kneeling down to open it. But as he unlatched the locks, he didn't pull out documents. He pulled out a high-intensity military flashbang grenade, pulled the pin, and threw it straight up toward the floodlights.

THE HOOK: A blinding white light and a deafening explosion shattered the warehouse. Screams echoed from the gantry. Adrian lunged forward to grab a hidden weapon, but a sudden, massive explosion rocked the foundation of the building. Marcus hadn't been lying about the timer. The secondary explosives placed by Vanessa’s team had been triggered early. The metal gantry began to collapse, snapping the steel cables holding the twins' cages, sending them plummeting toward the black river below.
