Chapter 2 - THE GHOST IN THE MACHINE

Alessandro stared at her. The silence in the garage grew heavy, broken only by the hum of the old fluorescent light tube overhead.

"Defense logistics," Alessandro repeated, the words tasting foreign on his tongue. "You expect me to believe an ex-Pentagon coder is hiding out in a dusty garage with a six-year-old child, fixing tractors?"

"I don't expect you to believe anything, Mr. Moretti," Sophia said, tossing the scanner onto the workbench. She walked over to a heavy steel cabinet, unlocked it with a key hidden behind a calendar, and pulled out a sleek, matte-black laptop that looked entirely out of place among the wrenches and oil cans. "Belief is a luxury for men who don't have targets painted on their backs. You have a target. And right now, your fancy German tank is a rolling coffin."

She slammed the laptop onto the table and plugged a specialized cable directly into the Maybach's exposed steering column. The car’s dashboard flickered once, then died entirely.

"What are you doing to my car?" Alessandro asked, stepping forward.

"Giving you your life back," she snapped without looking up. "Or at least giving you a fighting chance. Your onboard computer has a secondary tracking ping wired into the fuel injection system. If we don't sever it in the next four minutes, your friend Marco won't just know where you are—he'll know your heart rate."

Alessandro didn't move. He stood behind her, watching the furious speed of her fingers across the keyboard. The code scrolling down the screen was dense, written in a proprietary language he recognized only because his own tech teams used variations of it for high-security bank transfers.

"Who are you?" he asked quietly. "People like you don't just disappear. The government either puts you in a box or puts you on a payroll."

"I chose a third option," Sophia said, her jaw tightening. "I chose to live. Five years ago, I uncovered a black-ops logistics network funneling illegal arms through civilian shipping channels. My superior tried to bury me with the cargo. I faked my death, took my daughter, and ran until the money ran out and the grease became my camouflage."

She hit the enter key with a definitive clack.

Across the garage, a small electronic box hidden deep beneath the Maybach's dashboard emitted a sharp, high-pitched whine, followed by a faint pop of burning circuitry.

"There," Sophia breathed, leaning back and wiping a streak of sweat from her forehead. "You're off the grid. As far as New York knows, Alessandro Moretti vanished into thin air."

"And Marco?"

"Marco is probably wondering why his radar screen just went dark." Sophia turned her head, her gray-blue eyes locking onto his. "Which means he’s going to send a cleanup crew. And based on the coordinates of that satellite ping before I killed it, they’ll be here in twenty minutes."
