Chapter 4 - THE TRAP IS SET

The shadows lengthened, stretching across the dusty clearing like grasping fingers.
Alessandro moved with the fluid, silent grace of a predator who had survived decades of turf wars. He checked the magazine of his Beretta, chambered a round with a crisp clack, and tucked it securely into his holster. Beside him, Sophia was moving through the garage with terrifying efficiency, stringing heavy-duty cables across the dirt driveway and wiring improvised explosive charges into the base of the wooden fence posts.
"You're awfully comfortable with explosives, Ms. Reed," Alessandro noted, crouching behind an overturned tractor tire to watch her work.
"When you spend four years hiding from the most dangerous men on the planet, you learn that a little fertilizer and diesel go a long way," Sophia replied, not breaking rhythm as she twisted two copper wires together. "Besides, I told you. Honest work."
A low rumble vibrated through the earth.
It wasn't loud yet—just a deep, mechanical growl carrying across the flat cornfields.
"They're early," Alessandro whispered, his eyes locking onto the dirt road where the first tendrils of dust were rising against the violet horizon.
"Not early," Sophia said, standing up and wiping her hands on her thighs. "Right on schedule. Get behind the engine hoist. If you stand in the open light, the thermal signature from your suit will give you away before they even clear the bend."
Alessandro didn't argue. He slid into position behind the heavy steel frame of the hoist, his MP5 raised, his finger resting lightly along the trigger guard. He watched Sophia through the narrow gap between two metal beams. She didn't look like a victim. She looked like a general preparing for a siege.
The rumble grew into a roar.
Two black, matte-finish SUVs tore around the final curve of the dirt road, their high beams cutting through the gathering dusk like twin swords of white light. They didn't slow down as they approached the clearing. They plowed right through the wooden fence, sending splinters flying into the air like shrapnel.
The first SUV slammed to a halt twenty feet from the garage doors. The second vehicle swung wide, cutting off any potential escape route toward the cornfields.
Doors flew open. Men in tactical vests, balaclavas, and carrying assault rifles poured out into the dust.
"Clear the perimeter!" a harsh voice barked over the crunch of gravel. "Sweep the garage! Boss wants Moretti's head on a spike, dead or alive!"
Alessandro tightened his grip on his weapon, his breath slowing down to a rhythmic, steady pulse.
Sophia stood in the shadows near the back of the garage, her hand resting on a small red toggle switch wired directly into the wall. Her face was an unreadable mask of ice.

"Welcome to Reed & Daughter Auto Repair," she whispered into the empty air.
And she flipped the switch.
