Chapter 8 - THE ROAD AHEAD

The sun was beginning to crest over the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and amber as the Maybach rolled smoothly back onto the paved highway.

The engine purred like a contented cat. The satellite uplink was clear, the custom ECU had been completely rewritten, and every trace of the ambush had been neatly erased from the records.

Alessandro sat in the back seat, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt. In the front seat, Sophia was driving, her hands steady on the steering wheel, her hair tied back in its usual messy braid. In the back seat behind them, little Emma was fast asleep against a plush leather pillow, clutching her rabbit-shaped crossbody bag tightly to her chest.

Alessandro looked out the window at the endless ribbon of highway stretching out before them.

"You don't have to keep fixing cars in the middle of nowhere, Sophia," Alessandro said quietly, his voice carrying clearly over the hum of the engine. "My security division needs a chief architect. The salary comes with a house in Manhattan, total immunity, and people who will never ask questions about your past."

Sophia didn't look at him. She kept her eyes fixed on the road ahead, a faint, knowing smile playing at the corners of her lips.

"I like my garage, Mr. Moretti," she said smoothly. "The pay is terrible, the hours are long, and the customers are usually disasters." She glanced at him in the rearview mirror. "But at least I know how to fix them."

Alessandro leaned back against the leather seat, closed his eyes, and for the first time in twenty years, he let out a genuine, relaxed laugh.

"Fair enough, Ms. Reed," Alessandro said. "Fair enough."
