Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT STRIKEBy 10:00 PM, the Newport Coast mansion was wrapped in a deceptive, heavy silence. The ocean waves slapped rhythmically against the rocks below, masking the heavy footsteps echoing through the lower corridors.

Ethan sat in total darkness in his home study, illuminated only by the faint, eerie blue glow of three separate monitors. He hadn't left the house. When Nora and Lily packed up their bags at 5:00 PM, Ethan had quietly handed Nora an extra envelope containing three months' advance pay, telling her to take the rest of the week off for "family time."
Nora had looked confused, tears welling in her eyes, but thanked him profusely before leaving with Lily, who had given Ethan a secret, knowing nod at the front door.
Now, Ethan was hunting his own predators.
He pulled up the live security feed from the hidden backdoor camera. A sleek, matte-black European sedan pulled silently into the private gated driveway. The headlights were off. Two figures stepped out of the vehicle, moving with the practiced, effortless ease of people who believed they owned the property.
Derek Ward and Vanessa Crane.
Ethan watched them on the monitor as they whispered near the fountain. Vanessa was wearing a sharp, emerald silk dress, her blonde hair pulled back into a severe chignon. Derek looked tense, adjusting his designer cufflinks with nervous fingers.
"Are you sure he's asleep?" Vanessa’s voice crackled through the audio feed of the exterior mic. "The board meeting is in less than seventy-two hours, Derek. If he catches us downloading the master source code directly from his terminal, we’re finished. Both of us."
"Relax, V," Derek scoffed quietly, pulling a master override keycard from his pocket. "Ethan takes sleeping pills when he gets stressed. I checked his biometric sleep tracker app. He’s completely out. Once I plug this hardware bypass into his office terminal, the entire Lattice AI source code transfers to our external servers in the Cayman Islands. By Monday morning, Ethan Vale will be a bankrupt visionary with nothing to his name, and we’ll be heading Vale Harbor Systems."
"And the wedding?" Vanessa asked with a chillingly cold smirk.
"Call it off," Derek laughed softly. "Or let him cry at the altar. Doesn't matter to me, as long as we have the billions."
Inside the dark study, Ethan’s hand tightened around the heavy crystal paperweight on his desk until his knuckles turned pure white. The betrayal wasn't just professional; it was visceral, tearing through his chest like a rusty blade. Ten years of brotherhood. Three years of passionate, devoted love. All of it manufactured. All of it a lie designed to rob him blind.
They pushed open the side French doors. The soft click of the lock echoed through the silent hallway.
Derek and Vanessa crept up the grand staircase like ghosts, moving purposefully toward the glass office. They didn't turn on the lights. They didn't need to. They knew every inch of the house.
Derek slid the master override card into the biometric scanner of the office door. The light flashed green.
They stepped inside, closing the door softly behind them.
Derek walked straight to Ethan’s walnut desk, pulled a high-speed encrypted flash drive from his jacket, and jammed it straight into the master terminal port. Lines of code began scrolling furiously across the screen.
"Look at that," Derek whispered, a triumphant, greedy grin spreading across his face. "It's downloading. The entire architecture. We actually did it, V."
Vanessa walked over to the abstract painting on the wall, reaching out her manicured hand to check the status of the hidden camera. Her fingers brushed against empty drywall.
Her smile vanished.
"Derek..." she whispered, her voice tightening with sudden panic. "The camera... it’s gone."
Derek stopped typing. "What do you mean it's gone?"
"The frame... the painting... the micro-cam is missing!" Vanessa spun around, her eyes wide with terror as she scanned the dark room. "Somebody took it!"
A slow, heavy clap echoed from the shadows of the far corner of the room.
Clap. Clap. Clap.

Derek and Vanessa froze in absolute terror as a tall figure slowly stood up from the leather wingback chair, bathed in the harsh blue light of the computer monitors.
It was Ethan. And he wasn't sleeping.
