Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the Blood-Stained Ledger

The air in the grand penthouse suddenly smelled of rain, expensive cedar, and absolute, crushing finality.
Grant Hartwell stood paralyzed, his knuckles white around the grip of the black handgun, the metal shaking violently as if trying to free itself from his terrified grasp. But the man in the navy coat—Dante Vance—did not look at the weapon. He looked past Grant, his dark, calculating eyes scanning the shattered walnut door, the spilled chamomile tea, and finally, Evelyn, crumpled on the marble floor like a broken porcelain doll.
For a fraction of a second, something dangerous flickered in Dante’s gaze. A cold, surgical fury.
"Put the gun down, Grant," Dante said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the terrifying weight of a judge reading a death warrant. "Unless you want your final act on earth to be an insult to my intelligence."
Grant’s breath hitched. His eyes darted to the two hulking bodyguards flanking Dante—Victor, the man with the scarred eyebrow, and Mason, whose gloved hands flexed rhythmically.
"I—I have money," Grant stammered, backing up until the back of his knees hit the modern leather sofa. "My developments... the Marina project... the municipal contracts... I can sign them over to the Vance syndicate right now. Everything!"
Dante stepped forward, his leather shoes clicking against the pristine marble floor. He stopped a yard away from Grant, reaching slowly inside his overcoat.
Grant flinched, bracing for a bullet.
Instead, Dante pulled out a thick, leather-bound ledger with water-stained edges. He tossed it carelessly onto the glass coffee table. It landed with a heavy, sickening thud.
"Your municipal contracts are tied to shell companies in the Cayman Islands that the SEC froze three hours ago," Dante said calmly, unbuttoning his overcoat. "Your Marina project is bankrupt, backed by fake collateral and predatory loans you took out against properties you didn't even own."
Grant gasped, dropping his arms. The gun slipped from his nerveless fingers, clattering loudly against the floor.
"How... how do you know that?" Grant whispered.
Dante looked down at him with profound disdain. "Because I’m the one who bought your debt from the Swiss banks on Monday morning. I didn't come here tonight to collect money, Grant. I came to collect you."
On the floor, Evelyn’s mind raced through the pain. The Vance syndicate. She knew the name. Every major business leader in Chicago whispered it behind closed doors. Dante Vance controlled the city's underbelly, its real estate monopolies, and its political strings. He was a myth, a ghost story told to frighten corrupt politicians.
And he was standing in her kitchen.
Dante turned his head slowly, his gaze locking onto Evelyn. He saw the dark, swelling bruise blooming across her jawline, the torn lace of her sleeve, and the steady trickle of blood at the corner of her mouth.
Dante didn't ask what happened. He didn't need to.
He crouched down, ignoring the spilled tea soaking into the knees of his expensive trousers, and extended a gloved hand toward Evelyn.
"Can you stand, Mrs. Hartwell?" Dante asked, his voice softening just enough for only her to hear. "Or should I have Mason carry you?"
May you like
Evelyn stared at his outstretched hand. For three years, she had been told she was worthless, invisible, and trapped. Now, the most feared man in Chicago was kneeling before her in the wreckage of her home.
Slowly, ignoring the agonizing scream of her fractured ribs, Evelyn placed her trembling hand in his.
