Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Grant Hartwell

While the North Shore mansion held its quiet, fragile tension, downtown Chicago was waking up to a media earthquake.

By 6:00 AM, every major news station, financial blog, and social media platform had broken the story.

“FALL OF AN EMPIRE: Real Estate Icon Grant Hartwell Arrested in Massive Federal Fraud and Corruption Probe.”

Footage played on repeat across television screens: federal agents hauling boxes of shredded documents out of the Hartwell Tower downtown, while a handcuffed Grant Hartwell—his face pale, his expensive suit rumpled and stained—was shoved into the back of an unmarked federal van. He kept his head down, desperately trying to shield his face from the blinding camera flashes of reporters shouting questions about shell companies, embezzlement, and the mysterious acquisition of his debt by the Vance Syndicate.

In her suite at the North Shore estate, Evelyn sat wrapped in a blanket on the sofa, watching the news broadcast on a muted television screen.

The man on the screen looked small. Pathetic. Stripped of his money, his lawyers, and his terrifying control over her life, Grant was nothing more than a frightened coward.

The bedroom door opened softly, and Dante walked in, carrying a cup of black coffee. He looked at the television screen, then down at Evelyn.

"It’s done," Dante said calmly, handing her a fresh glass of water. "The federal prosecutor just locked down his bail. He’s going straight to a maximum-security holding facility pending trial. His assets are frozen permanently. He will never touch a dime, or another human being, ever again."

Evelyn let out a long, shuddering breath. The last knot of fear that had coiled around her stomach for three years finally untied and dissolved into nothingness.

She looked up at Dante. "It’s really over?"

"It’s really over," Dante confirmed, sitting down on the edge of the sofa across from her.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy brass key. He placed it gently on the coffee table between them.

"The car is waiting outside, Evelyn," Dante said, his voice completely steady, though his eyes betrayed a sudden, sharp reluctance. "The pilot received instructions an hour ago. You can be in Switzerland by tonight."

Evelyn looked at the brass key. Then she looked up at Dante’s face—the strong jaw, the dark eyes that had watched over her from the shadows, the man who had torn down an empire just to give her back her life.

She slowly reached out, picked up the key, and dropped it into the glass of water on the table, where it sank silently to the bottom.

Dante’s breath caught. He stared at the glass, then snapped his gaze up to hers, sheer disbelief flashing across his formidable face.

"What are you doing?" he asked, his voice rough.

Evelyn stood up, ignoring the faint ache in her ribs, and stepped right up to him. She placed both hands flat against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart beneath his shirt.

"I spent three years hiding behind a perfect marriage that was actually a prison," Evelyn said, her voice clear, fierce, and entirely unshakeable. "I’m not running away to a mountain in Switzerland to hide behind a new name."

Dante gripped her wrists, not to push her away, but as if anchoring himself to the only real thing in his world. "Evelyn... what do you want?"

"I want to stay," she whispered, a fierce, beautiful smile breaking across her face for the first time in years. "And I want to help you burn down whatever is left."
