Chapter 4 - The Safehouse on Lake Michigan

The Mercedes glided through the rain-slicked streets of Chicago, slipping away from the glittering skyscrapers of the Loop and heading north toward the edge of Lake Michigan.

Inside the vehicle, the partition between the front and back seats remained closed. The cabin was warm, illuminated only by the faint, ambient glow of the dashboard.

Evelyn sat rigidly on the edge of the leather seat, holding an ice pack that Mason had wordlessly handed to her before locking them inside. The cold plastic pressed against her swollen cheek, but the physical pain was entirely overshadowed by the storm raging in her mind.

"Drink this," Dante said, holding out a small glass of amber liquid.

"What is it?" she asked suspiciously, eyeing the glass.

"Water with a mild pain reliever," Dante replied calmly, leaning back against his side of the car. "I’m not trying to drug you, Evelyn. If I wanted you unconscious, I wouldn't have brought you into my car."

Reluctantly, she took the glass, her fingers brushing his. His skin was warm, a sharp contrast to the cold, ruthless reputation he held across the city. She took a small sip; the cool water instantly soothing her raw throat.

"Where are we going?" she asked, looking out the tinted window as the city skyline faded into dark, crashing waves of the lake.

"To a place where Grant’s lawyers, his investors, and his police payoffs cannot reach," Dante said. "My estate on the North Shore. You’ll have a medical team waiting, security detail, and—most importantly—absolute peace."

"I can't just... disappear," Evelyn protested weakly, though even as she said it, she knew how hollow it sounded. "The police... the media... Grant’s company..."

"Grant’s company is currently being audited by federal forensic accountants dispatched by the U.S. Attorney’s office," Dante interrupted smoothly. "As of twenty minutes ago, his assets have been seized. By sunrise, the media won't be talking about Grant Hartwell the philanthropist; they’ll be talking about Grant Hartwell the corporate fraudster and domestic abuser."

Evelyn stared at him, stunned. "You orchestrated all of this."

"I accelerated it," Dante corrected, turning his head to look at her directly. "I spent the last two years legally acquiring his debt note by note, buying up his board members, and gathering ironclad evidence of his shell companies. I was waiting for the right moment to strike. Tonight... tonight he forced my hand when I saw his hand go for that gun while you were lying on the kitchen floor."

A heavy silence fell between them. Evelyn looked down at her lap, her fingers tracing the hem of her torn dress.

"You knew my father," she whispered, the question lingering in her chest like an unexploded bomb.

Dante looked out the window at the dark expanse of the lake before turning back to her.

"Your father saved my older brother’s life," Dante said softly, the armor around his voice finally cracking just a fraction. "Back when we were kids living in the shadows of the steel mills. Thomas Marshall gave my family money for medicine when we had nothing. When he died, everyone called it an accident. Everyone looked the other way because the Hartwells owned the judges, the police, and the newspapers."

May you like

Dante leaned forward, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made it difficult to breathe.

"I swore an oath on your father’s grave, Evelyn. I swore that one day, I would tear down everything the Hartwells built, brick by brick. And I swore that I would find you."
