Chapter 3 - The Shadow’s ReachLiam packed his bags by noon, muttering threats under his breath about how we would all regret this, how "they" wouldn't let him go down alone. I watched him from the porch as he threw his designer duffel bag into his sleek, overpriced sports car—purchased, no doubt, with money meant for my parents' cancer treatments and home repairs.

As his car sped down the street, I knew this wasn't the end.
People like Liam don't just fold when they get caught; they double down on destruction. His mention of dangerous creditors the night before wasn't just a bluff. He was deep in debt to a local syndicate run by a loan shark named Marcus Vance—a ruthless predator who operated out of the neon-lit underworld of downtown Phoenix.
"Isaac," my mother called softly from the doorway, wrapping a shawl tighter around her shoulders. "Are you sure this is safe? Liam looked so terrified before he left. Not of us... of someone else."
"Don't worry, Mom," I reassured her, offering a warm, confident smile that masked the tactical gears turning in my mind. "I've handled worse threats than a few local thugs. For the first time in ten years, you are going to eat a warm meal in a warm house."
That afternoon, I called in a favor from an old military intelligence contact based at Luke Air Force Base. Within two hours, a full dossier on Marcus Vance and his organization landed on my encrypted terminal.
The file revealed alarming details: Vance wasn't just a local loan shark. He was tied into a massive money-laundering ring, and Liam had recently used our family home as collateral to secure a massive fifty-thousand-dollar gambling loan.
The deadline for repayment? Tomorrow night.
If Liam couldn't pay, Vance’s enforcers were scheduled to repossess the property—legally or illegally. And since Liam had forged our father's signature on the secondary mortgage documents, the house could technically be seized.
My blood ran cold. Liam hadn't just stolen my money; he had practically sold our childhood home out from under us.

I closed the laptop, stood up, and strapped my combat knife securely to my forearm.
If Marcus Vance wanted my family's house, he was going to have to go through me first.
