Chapter 8 - The Desperate TrapThe abandoned warehouse on the edge of the industrial park was surrounded by rusted shipping containers and overgrown weeds. The afternoon sun cast long, menacing shadows across the desolate yard.

I parked my rental vehicle two blocks away, cutting the headlights and moving on foot with silent, tactical precision. My combat knife was secured to my forearm, and my senses were dialed up to maximum awareness.

If Liam was still in town instead of fleeing the state, it meant someone else was pulling his strings. Vance might have run, but syndicates have hierarchical structures. When a regional boss falls, a more ruthless successor usually steps into the power vacuum.

I slipped through a cracked side door of the warehouse, blending seamlessly into the deep shadows of the cavernous interior.

In the center of the dilapidated room, illuminated by a single flickering overhead bulb, stood Liam. But he wasn't alone.

Two towering men in tactical gear—far more disciplined and dangerous than Vance's club bouncers—stood on either side of him. Standing in front of them was a sharp-featured woman in an expensive wool trench coat, holding a sleek tablet.

"You promised me protection!" Liam was whining, his voice shaking with hysteria. "I gave you all the banking codes! I gave you the property titles! Why am I still here?"

The woman chuckled, a cold, metallic sound. "Protection, Liam? In our line of work, a liability doesn't get protection. A liability gets eliminated. You thought you could double-cross Marcus and walk away clean by selling his database to us? You're remarkably naive."

Liam’s face turned chalk white. "You said if I helped the cartel take over Vance's territory, you’d let me go to Mexico with cash!"

"We lied," the woman replied smoothly, raising a silenced pistol and pointing it directly at Liam’s forehead.

My training kicked in instantly. There was no time for hesitation.

"Drop the weapon," I commanded, stepping out from the shadows into the ring of light.

The two tactical enforcers whipped around, raising their automatic rifles, but I was already moving. I drew my concealed sidearm, firing two precise shots that shattered the overhead lightbulb, plunging the warehouse into pitch-black darkness.

Chaos erupted.
