The mortgage documents—stamped PAID IN FULL and legally annulled by Vance’s terrified legal team before they skipped town—sat neatly in a leather folder on the counter.

True to his cowardly nature, he had packed his remaining belongings into his car the night Vance’s syndicate dissolved and fled the state, knowing he could never face us again. He was gone, a ghost of a different kind—a reminder of how greed can rot a soul from the inside out.
I stood by the front window, holding a steaming mug of coffee, watching the golden light hit the quiet suburban street.
"Isaac," my mother called out softly, walking over and placing a warm hand on my shoulder. She looked into my eyes, her own filled with a mixture of infinite gratitude and sorrow. "You saved us. Again. But... what happens to you now? Do you have to go back to the shadows?"
