Chapter 7 - The Lingering SmokeThe silence of the desert morning was peaceful, but my mind remained on high alert. Even though Marcus Vance and his syndicate had fled Phoenix overnight, the criminal underworld has a long memory. Men like Vance don't just disappear forever; they lick their wounds, regroup, and look for vulnerabilities.

I sat on the front porch with my tactical laptop open on my knees, running a diagnostic sweep on the local communication frequencies and monitoring the encrypted channels of Vance's former associates.

My father stepped out onto the porch, the morning breeze gently rustling his white hair. He held two mugs of black coffee, handing one to me with a steady, appreciative hand.

"You haven't slept, Isaac," my father said quietly, leaning against the wooden railing.

"I'm fine, Dad," I replied, taking a sip. "Old habits die hard. In the field, sleep is a luxury you only afford when the perimeter is completely secure."

My father looked out toward the empty street, his expression heavy with reflection. "Your mother and I... we were so blind. We let Liam fool us because we wanted to believe our family was still intact. We never imagined a son of ours could be so cruel."

"Greed makes monsters out of ordinary people," I said softly. "You don't need to carry that guilt anymore. Liam chose his path. We need to focus on moving forward."

My father nodded slowly, placing a heavy hand on my shoulder. "Your mother found brochures for that new medical clinic downtown. She wants to schedule a full check-up for us next week. For the first time in years, we actually have health insurance that works."

I smiled, feeling a genuine warmth spread through my chest. That was why I survived the black-ops missions. That was why I endured the cold, the isolation, and the danger. Seeing my parents safe, warm, and hopeful was worth every scar.

Suddenly, a sharp, high-pitched alert blinked red on my laptop screen.

An encrypted satellite ping had just originated from an abandoned industrial warehouse on the outskirts of industrial Phoenix—a known drop point for Vance's syndicate.

Someone was still transmitting data. And based on the signature codes, it wasn't one of Vance's men.

It was Liam.
