Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF SURVIVAL

The shattered window let in the howling night wind, scattering papers and medical sheets across the room like autumn leaves. Marcus scrambled for his dropped weapon, but Elena didn't give him the chance. She kicked the gun across the room, where it slid right under the heavy medical cabinet.
Silvio burst back into the room, his breath coming in ragged gasps, his coat torn. He took in the scene instantly: Dr. Vane dead on the floor, Marcus bleeding from the head, and his brother Luca sitting upright, clutching his chest but very much alive.
"Marcus," Silvio growled, his face contorting in pure betrayal. He didn't ask questions. He didn't need to. He raised his weapon and aimed it at the bodyguard.
"Wait!" Elena screamed, throwing herself in front of Silvio's line of fire. "Don't kill him! If you kill him, you'll never know who else is involved! He said there's a council—the Maroni family isn't working alone. Someone inside your own inner circle authorized this!"
Silvio’s finger hovered over the trigger, his muscles tense with rage. "He tried to kill my brother. He dies."
"If he dies, the war keeps going, and next time, you won't be able to save Luca," Elena argued, her voice fierce despite her terror. "Use him. Make him talk. Find the real mastermind."
Luca let out a weak, authoritative cough from the bed, raising a trembling hand. Silvio looked at his brother, then slowly lowered the gun.
"Tie him up," Silvio barked at two of his guards who had finally caught up. He turned his gaze back to Elena, a newfound respect gleaming in his dark eyes. "You've got guts, Nurse Marlowe. More than most men in our organization."

"I just want to survive the night," Elena said, her knees finally giving out as she slid down the wall, exhaustion taking over.
The immediate danger had passed, but as she looked out at the city skyline through the broken window, she knew her life would never be the same. She had saved the king of the underworld, and in doing so, she had become a permanent player in a very deadly game.
