Chapter 1 - THE TASTE OF ASHES

The air in the ultra-modern, pristine white kitchen grew suffocatingly cold. The subtle, rhythmic click-clack of Vanessa’s stilettos against the Italian marble sounded like the slow ticking of a bomb.
David’s heart thundered against his ribs, a wild, visceral roar echoing in his ears. He kept his arm firmly wrapped around his six-year-old daughter, Sophie, feeling the violent tremors racking her tiny body. Her face, stained with wet tears and dirtied with brown paste, was pressed against his bespoke tailored suit.
"Vanessa," David rasped, his voice dripping with venom, though a sickening fear clutched at his throat. "What is the meaning of this?"
Vanessa didn't flinch. She leaned gracefully against the doorway, resting a slender hand on the doorframe. Her silk black dress draped over her frame like a shroud. She offered a cold, serene smile—the kind that didn't reach her pale gray eyes.
"David, darling," Vanessa said smoothly, her tone as light as morning mist. "You’re overreacting. As usual. You hire me as a governess to instil discipline, yet you burst in here like a madman the moment she shed a few spoiled tears."
"Discipline?" David roared, standing up and pulling Sophie behind his legs. He pointed a trembling finger at the dog bowl sitting on the polished floor. "You forced my daughter to eat out of a dog bowl! She's six years old!"
"She threw her organic truffle purée into the trash bin," Vanessa replied without missing a beat, crossing her arms. "I simply taught her the value of what she wastes. If she acts like a wild animal who rejects good food, she eats like one. It's tough love, David. Something your late wife clearly failed to teach her before she abandoned you both."
The mention of his deceased wife, Clara, sent a jolt of pure fury through David’s veins. He took a step forward, his fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. "You pack your bags. Right now. You are fired, Vanessa. Get out of my house before I call the police."
Vanessa didn't look terrified. She didn't even look mildly inconvenienced. Instead, she let out a quiet, melodic laugh that chilled David to the bone.
"Fired?" Vanessa purred, tilting her head. She reached into her designer leather handbag, pulled out her phone, and tapped the screen a few times before turning it toward David. "Are you quite sure you want to do that, Mr. Vance?"
David glanced at the screen, expecting a legal threat or a breach-of-contract notice. Instead, his blood ran utterly cold.
On the screen was a live video feed. It showed the interior of David’s primary offshore holding account—the one containing eighty percent of his tech firm’s liquid assets, worth tens of millions of dollars. The account was currently in the middle of an automated wire transfer sequence, routing funds into an untraceable Swiss vault.
At the bottom of the screen was a digital countdown timer: 04:59... 04:58...
"If you call the police, or if you attempt to kick me out of this mansion," Vanessa whispered, taking a slow step toward him, "I press one button, and your entire empire crumbles into dust overnight. You will be bankrupt, disgraced, and imprisoned for investor fraud before the sun sets."
"How... how do you have access to those clearance keys?" David gasped, his breath hitching in his chest. "Those are protected by Clara’s master encryption!"
Vanessa’s lips curled into a terrifying, triumphant smirk.
"Because, my dear David... Clara didn't die in a car accident. She gave me those keys before she 'disappeared.' And she sent me here to finish what she started."
Before David could process the shattered remnants of his reality, Sophie tugged frantically at his pant leg, pointing her tiny finger toward the hallway window behind Vanessa.
"Daddy..." Sophie sobbed softly. "The dark car... it’s back."
May you like
David spun around toward the window. Parked right at the edge of his gated estate, shrouded in the heavy fog, was a black SUV with blacked-out windows. Its headlights flashed twice.
Vanessa’s smile widened. "Your time is running out, David. Welcome to the nightmare."
