Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING AT THE GATES

The entire mansion was plunged into complete darkness, save for the strobing red emergency lights that continued to flash rhythmically upstairs.

"Follow me!" David shouted, leading Sophie, Vanessa, and Julian up the basement stairs into the main foyer.

The storm outside had reached its peak. Thunder crashed violently overhead, rattling the high stained-glass windows of the grand entrance. Rain lashed against the glass like thrown gravel.

As they reached the front entrance, the heavy double oak doors were blown open by a violent gust of wind.

Standing on the rain-swept terrace outside, framed by flashes of jagged lightning, was a figure in a dark trench coat, holding a heavy black umbrella.

Behind her, idling in the driveway, were two sleek black SUVs filled with armed men.

The figure lowered the umbrella slightly, revealing a pale, sharp face, dark sunken eyes, and a cruel, triumphant smile.

It was Clara.

"You always were persistent, David," Clara said, her voice easily cutting through the sound of the howling storm. "And Vanessa... how pathetic. You actually thought you were playing detective, didn't you?"

Vanessa stepped forward, her eyes blazing with absolute fury. "You used me, Clara! You let me believe David murdered you! You made me hate him!"

"Because you were useful, dear sister," Clara sneered, stepping into the grand foyer, her heels clicking against the wet marble floor. "You were the perfect weapon. Driven by righteous indignation, completely blind to the truth. And now, you've handed me everything I needed. David's assets are transferred. His reputation is ruined. The narrative is complete: David Vance killed his brother and governess in a murder-suicide after being exposed for financial fraud."

Clara raised her right hand and snapped her fingers.

Four heavily armed mercenaries stepped out of the shadows of the porch, raising tactical rifles, pointing them directly at David, Julian, and Vanessa.

"Drop the gun, Julian," Clara ordered coolly. "Or they take Sophie first."

Julian looked at David, then down at his pistol. With a bitter curse, he tossed the gun onto the floor. It skittered across the wet marble.

"Clara, please," David said, stepping in front of Sophie, shielding her with his body. "Take the money. Take the company. Take everything! Just let Sophie and Vanessa walk away. They have nothing to do with this!"

Clara looked at Sophie, her expression devoid of any maternal warmth. "Sophie is coming with me. She's my insurance policy. A young child, traumatized by her father's horrific crime spree... she will inherit what's left, and I will control her trust until she turns twenty-one."

"I'm not going with you!" Sophie suddenly shouted, her tiny voice echoing off the high ceilings. She stepped out from behind David, her face burning with pure defiance. "You're a bad person! Daddy loves me! You just want my money!"

Clara’s cold demeanor flickered for a second, replaced by a flash of ugly rage. "You stupid little brat. I gave you life!"

"No," David said, taking a step forward, his voice steady, grounded, and utterly fearless. "You gave her life, Clara. But I raised her. And I will die before I let you touch her again."

Clara chuckled darkly. "Then die."

She gave a brief nod to the lead mercenary. The man's finger tightened on the trigger.
