Chapter 5 - THE MASTERMIND IN PINK

The silence in the basement panic room was deafening. David stood frozen, gun lowered, staring at his six-year-old daughter as if she were a complete stranger.

Vanessa stepped back, her mouth agape, clutching her chest. "Sophie... what are you saying? Clara... your mother spoke to you?"

"Mummy comes to my window every night," Sophie said simple, tilting her head with an innocent, terrifying smile. "She gives me sweet candy and tells me secrets. She told me Miss Vanessa was bad and wanted to take Daddy's money. But she also said Daddy was bad because he locked her away."

"Locked her away?" David gasped, dropping to his knees to match his daughter's eye level. "Sophie, look at me! I loved your mother! I spent two years mourning her! I didn't lock anyone away!"

"You didn't, David," a deep, raspy voice echoed from the doorway of the cellar.

David and Vanessa spun around simultaneously.

Standing at the entrance of the basement was Julian. He was bleeding from a nasty gash on his forehead where David had struck him, but he wasn't holding a weapon. Instead, he held a sleek black tablet playing a live audio feed.

"Julian..." Vanessa gasped. "What is this?"

"I just ran the serial numbers on the offshore bank transfer, Vanessa," Julian said, his voice shaking with a mixture of rage and profound betrayal. "The account we just wired David’s funds into... it wasn't yours. And it wasn't mine. It belongs to a private medical corporation registered in Geneva."

Julian pressed a button on the tablet, and a voice filled the damp room. It was smooth, cold, and instantly recognizable.

“Thank you for completing the transaction, Julian,” Clara’s voice echoed through the speaker. “Your services, and Vanessa’s emotional melodrama, are no longer required.”

Vanessa gasped, clutching her throat. "Clara?! You're... you're alive?!"

“Alive and well, sister,” Clara answered through the tablet speaker, a chilling laugh underlying her words. “Or at least, well enough to finally claim what is mine. You see, David never stole my money. I faked my own death two years ago because I was facing federal indictments for clinical malpractice. I needed a scapegoat. And who better than my loving, naive husband?”

David’s blood turned to ice. Every memory, every tear he had shed over Clara’s burning car, flashed before his eyes like a grotesque joke.

"You set this all up..." David whispered, staring at the speaker. "The police reports, the fake evidence... you fed it all to Vanessa to make her come after me!"

“Of course,” Clara replied smoothly. “Vanessa always was so dramatic, so easily manipulated by her guilt. I knew she would try to play the hero and avenge me. And Julian... well, Julian was always desperate for cash. Together, you two forced David to initiate the wire transfer, making it look like David was liquidating his assets to flee the country.”

“And what about Sophie?!” Vanessa screamed, tears streaming down her face. “You used your own daughter! You made her act like a abused child!”

“Sophie is my greatest creation,” Clara chuckled softly. “She’s brilliant, isn’t she? She played her part perfectly.”

Sophie stood beside David, listening to her mother’s voice, a blank, eerie expression on her face.

“And now,” Clara added, her voice darkening, “the final act begins.”

Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the panic room began to slide shut automatically!
