Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW OF CLARA

David’s brain worked in overdrive, trying to piece together the shattered jigsaw puzzle of his life. Clara, his beloved wife who was pronounced dead two years ago after her car plunged off a cliff into the churning ocean, was somehow tied to the woman standing in his kitchen.

"You're lying," David spat, his voice shaking. "Clara’s body was recovered. I identified her ring! I buried her!"

"You buried a body that was burned beyond recognition, carrying her ring," Vanessa corrected coolly, taking another deliberate step into the kitchen. "You were so blinded by grief—and your own corporate greed—that you didn't ask questions. You just signed the paperwork, took the insurance payout, and absorbed her family’s tech patents into your company."

Sophie shrank further behind David, her tiny hands clutching his trousers. "Daddy, please... don't let her touch me," she whimpered, her tears soaking into his pant leg.

"She won't touch you, sweetheart. I promise," David whispered, though his heart was hammering wildly. He looked back at Vanessa, his eyes narrowing. "What do you want, Vanessa? Money? The firm? Take it and leave us alone!"

"Oh, David, it was never just about money," Vanessa said softly, her voice dropping an octave, becoming dark and sharp. "It's about justice. Clara didn't crash that car by accident. Someone cut her brakes. And do you know who had the highest insurance policy on her life?"

David felt a cold sweat break out across his forehead. "Are you out of your mind? I loved Clara! I would never hurt her!"

"That’s not what the police file says," Vanessa hissed, pulling a thick yellow folder from her handbag and tossing it onto the marble island. "The real police report. The one your private security team paid fifty grand to hide."

David stared at the folder. He didn't need to open it to know what was inside. Two years ago, when Clara died, he had paid off investigators—not because he killed her, but because his board of directors feared a public scandal would destroy their upcoming IPO. But seeing it weaponized right now made him look guilty beyond redemption.

Suddenly, the front door of the mansion burst open with a heavy, reverberating thud.

Footsteps echoed down the grand hallway—heavy, military-style boots marching toward the kitchen.

David moved instinctively, shoving Sophie behind the central island and standing tall, preparing for a physical fight. "Vanessa, who is in my house?!"

From the shadows of the corridor stepped a tall, imposing man clad in a dark tactical jacket. He wore a silver ring on his left hand—an identical copy of the family crest ring Clara used to wear.

David froze. "Julian...?"

Julian Vance—David’s estranged older brother, who had vanished five years ago after being dishonorably discharged from the military—stepped into the harsh kitchen light. A cruel smile crossed his scarred face.

"Hello, little brother," Julian grunted, racking the slide of a sleek black pistol. "Did you really think you could steal my brother's legacy, my sister-in-law's company, and live happily ever after in this shiny white cage?"

"Julian... you're working with her?" David stammered, his mind racing.

"Working with her?" Julian chuckled, pointing the barrel of the gun straight at David’s chest. "David, Vanessa isn't my accomplice. She's Clara's sister."

David’s world tilted on its axis. Clara had always claimed to be an only child.

"Surprised?" Vanessa smiled, stepping beside Julian. "Clara hid me from you because she knew what kind of monster you were. And tonight, David... you're going to confess to everything you did to her."
