Chapter 3 - DUST TO DUST

The tension in the pristine white kitchen was thick enough to cut with a knife. The soft sound of Sophie's muffled sobs under the marble island was the only noise breaking the terrifying silence.

"I didn't kill her, Julian!" David pleaded, slowly raising his hands in the air, his mind frantically evaluating any escape route. "You have to believe me! I loved Clara. Someone framed me, and if you shoot me now, you'll never find out who actually tampered with her car!"

"Save your breath, David," Julian sneered, stepping closer. The cold metal barrel of the gun was now mere inches from David’s forehead. "The bank transfer is almost complete. In two minutes, every cent you have will be transferred to an offshore trust set up for Sophie. And as for you... you're going to take a long walk off the same cliff Clara fell from."

"And what about Sophie?" David demanded, his eyes flaring with desperate rage. "You're going to traumatize her? You forced her to eat out of a dog bowl, Vanessa! Is that how you honor Clara's memory? By abusing her daughter?!"

Vanessa’s expression flickered for a fraction of a second—a shadow of doubt or guilt crossed her features, but she quickly masked it with cold indifference. "It was necessary to break her loyalty to you, David. She needed to see you as weak. She needed to know that her daddy couldn't protect her."

"You're sick," David spat.

"Time's up," Julian announced grimly, glancing at his watch. The countdown timer on Vanessa's phone chimed—00:00. The transfer was complete. "Say goodbye to your daughter, David."

"NO!"

Suddenly, Sophie darted out from beneath the marble island. But she didn't run to David. She ran straight toward the back door of the kitchen, her tiny hand slamming down on a hidden red button mounted on the wall beneath the kitchen counter—a panic button David had installed years ago for home security, which was linked directly to a private armed response team.

An deafening alarm shrieked throughout the mansion. Red emergency lights blared, strobing against the stark white walls.

"You little brat!" Julian cursed, momentarily distracted by the blaring siren and blinding lights.

David didn't hesitate. Seizing the split-second distraction, he lunged forward, slamming his shoulder into Julian’s chest. The gun discharged with a deafening BANG, the bullet shattering a glass cabinet behind them, sending shards of crystal raining down.

David and Julian tumbled to the floor, wrestling violently for control of the weapon. Vanessa screamed, dropping her phone as she scrambled back.

"Sophie, RUN!" David bellowed, pinning Julian’s wrist to the floor with all his strength. "Run to the panic room in the basement!"

Sophie didn't hesitate. She scrambled up and sprinted down the hallway toward the basement stairs.

"Get the girl, Vanessa!" Julian grunted, driving an elbow into David’s ribs, knocking the wind out of him. "Don't let her get into the basement!"

Vanessa hesitated for a second, looking at the chaos, then turned and bolted down the dark hallway after Sophie.

David gasped for air, his ribs burning with white-hot pain. He grabbed a stray piece of shattered marble from the floor and slammed it onto Julian’s wrist. Julian roared in pain, dropping the gun. David kicked the weapon across the slick floor, scrambled to his feet, and threw a heavy punch straight into Julian’s jaw, knocking him cold against the island.

Panting heavily, David retrieved the gun, his hands trembling violently. He turned toward the dark hallway where Vanessa had chased his daughter.

"I'm coming, Sophie," David whispered, his eyes filled with a lethal determination.
