Chapter 3 - THE GRAVE EMPTY

The man standing in the doorway was supposed to be dead.

Twelve years ago, Julian Torino—Vincent’s older, ruthless brother and the original architect of the family empire—had allegedly died in a fiery car bombing orchestrated by the Sicilian mafia. Vincent had identified the charred remains, held the memorial service, and taken the reins of the syndicate.

Yet here he was. Older, bearing a jagged, brutal scar running from his jawline down into his collar—a souvenir from the blast—but undeniably alive.

Marcus lowered his gun slightly, turning to look at the ghost with a twisted, triumphant smirk. "I told you he’d come out of hiding once the pressure got high enough."

Vincent felt the room tilt. The entire architecture of his life, his memories, his grief, and his guilt were suddenly revealed as an elaborate, monstrous lie.

"You..." Vincent whispered, the word tearing through his throat like broken glass as he pushed past Elena and shoved the closet door open wide.

The creak of the door made Marcus and Julian snap their heads toward the walk-in closet.

Julian’s eyes locked onto his younger brother, a chilling, mocking smile spreading across his lips. "Surprise, little brother. Did you really think a few pounds of C4 and a burnt corpse from the morgue could wipe me out? You were always too sentimental. You wanted to believe I was gone so you could sit on the throne and play king."

Vincent stepped out of the closet, his towering frame radiating a terrifying, dark aura that made even the armed hitman instinctively take a half-step back. The grief that had haunted him for over a decade instantly evaporated, replaced by a cold, murderous clarity.

"You faked your death," Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of all emotion. "You let me mourn you. You let me carry your coffin."

"I needed to vanish," Julian replied smoothly, walking further into the room, his boots clicking against the marble floor. "The Feds were closing in, and the Syndicate wanted my head on a spike. So, I traded identities, laid low in South America, and watched you build my empire even bigger, fatter, and richer. And now? It’s time for the rightful owner to take it back."

Marcus stepped forward, nodding eagerly toward his biological father. That was the final, devastating piece of the puzzle. Marcus wasn't just Vincent’s ungrateful nephew; he was Julian’s son—hidden away, raised under Vincent’s nose as a Trojan horse.

"It’s over, Uncle Vince," Marcus said, raising his pistol, pointing it squarely at Vincent’s chest. "Drop your hands. You’re outnumbered, outgunned, and outmatched."

Vincent didn't flinch. He didn't raise his hands. Instead, a dangerous, razor-sharp smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"Outmatched?" Vincent chuckled—a low, dark sound that echoed chillingly through the bedroom. "Marcus, you arrogant little fool. You think because you found a ghost, you’ve won a war?"

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, a crisp, metallic click echoed from directly behind him.

Marcus froze. The barrel of a gun pressed firmly against the back of his skull.

Elena stepped out of the shadows of the closet right behind Marcus, her pistol locked and loaded, her eyes burning with ice-cold precision.

"Drop your weapon, boy," Elena commanded, her voice cutting through the tension like a razor. "Or I’ll scatter your brains across your father’s expensive new shoes."

Julian’s face twisted in fury. "Kill her! Shoot them both!"

But before the hitman could raise his rifle, the windows of the master bedroom suddenly shattered inward in a shower of glass, flash-bang grenades whistling through the air with a deafening screech of blinding light and concussive force.
