Chapter 5 - THE ASHES OF AN EMPIRE

The mansion was eerily quiet once the federal convoy rolled away into the rainy New York night, leaving behind shattered glass, splintered wood, and the lingering scent of cordite.

Vincent Torino stood alone on the expansive private balcony, staring out at the glittering skyline of the city he ruled. Below him, the streets stretched out like veins of light, vast and endless. For thirty years, he had believed he was the master of this domain, untouchable and supreme. Tonight had proved how fragile a throne built on blood and secrecy truly was.

His brother was alive—and now, heading straight for a maximum-security federal black site from which there was no return. His nephew, the boy he raised like his own flesh, was nothing more than a traitor traded for a cell block.

Footsteps approached softly from behind.

Vincent didn't turn around. He already knew who it was.

Agent Elena Vance stepped out onto the balcony, holding two crystal glasses filled with amber bourbon. She handed one to Vincent, who took it without a word, swirling the dark liquid in the glass before taking a slow, burning sip.

"The federal prosecutors are already moving on the rest of the Syndicate’s assets," Elena said quietly, leaning against the stone railing beside him. "Tony, Viktor, and the rest of the captains who sided with Julian are being rounded up as we speak. By sunrise, your empire won't just be secure—it’ll be clean."

Vincent looked sideways at her, studying the sharp profile of her face against the neon lights of the city. For three years, she had stood beside him as a silent ghost, pouring his coffee, cleaning his floors, and hiding a federal badge beneath a maid’s uniform.

"You played a dangerous game, Agent Vance," Vincent said, his voice deep and measured. "Living under my roof for three years, knowing who I am, waiting for the right moment to strike."

"It was the only way to get to the root of the Syndicate," she replied calmly, turning her dark eyes to meet his. "You’re a monster, Vincent Torino. You’ve killed, extorted, and ruined thousands of lives to build this empire. But compared to the Syndicate of Nine? You were small fry. They wanted to turn this city into a war zone of international terror and drug cartels. You kept things... contained."

Vincent let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "A compliment from a federal agent. I must be getting soft in my old age."

"Don't flatter yourself," Elena retorted with a faint, knowing smirk. "My mission here is officially finished. My resignation from Interpol is already drafted. The agency gets their convictions, and I get my freedom."

Vincent turned his body fully toward her, his powerful presence locking her in place. "And what does a high-ranking federal cyber-intelligence operative do when she leaves the service?"

Elena held his gaze, her expression unreadable, electric with tension. "That depends, Mr. Torino. Does a fallen king still need a bodyguard?"

Vincent stared at her for a long, silent moment. Then, slowly, a genuine smile broke across his scarred, weathered face—the first real smile he had worn in a decade.

"Not a bodyguard," Vincent said, clinking his glass against hers with a sharp, clear ring. "A partner."

Before Elena could answer, a sudden, frantic vibration buzzed from the tactical radio clipped inside her jacket. She frowned, pulled it out, and pressed the receiver to her ear.

As she listened to the voice on the other end, the color drained completely from her face.
