Chapter 6 - THE PHANTOM SIGNAL

Elena stiffened instantly, her professional instincts locking back into place like a steel trap.

"Say that again," she commanded into the radio, her voice sharp and urgent.

"Agent Vance, we have a catastrophic code-red situation," the voice on the other end crackled through the static—frantic, breathless, belonging to the lead tactical commander of the transport convoy. "We’re on the Queensboro Bridge. The transport van carrying Julian and Marcus... it’s been intercepted."

Vincent’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He stepped closer, listening to every word.

"Intercepted by whom?" Elena demanded, her fingers instinctively dropping toward the empty holster at her hip before remembering she had left her sidearm inside. "By the local police? Rival enforcers?"

"Negative! Negative!" the commander shouted over the roar of rushing wind and distant sirens. "It wasn't an ambush from the outside. It was an inside job! The escort vehicles—they turned their weapons on us! Our own tactical units opened fire! They blew the doors off the transport van and—"

A deafening explosion echoed through the radio speaker, followed by a burst of static, white noise, and absolute, terrifying silence.

"Commander? Commander, report!" Elena yelled into the receiver.

Nothing. Just the eerie hiss of dead air.

Slowly, Elena lowered the radio, her dark eyes wide with shock as she looked up at Vincent. "The transport convoy... it’s gone. They wiped out our own tactical team."

Vincent didn't panic. His blood turned to ice, but his mind crystallized with lethal precision. The realization hit him like a freight train.

"It wasn't just the Syndicate of Nine," Vincent said, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly whisper that carried the weight of impending doom. "And it wasn't just Julian and Marcus playing a long game."

"What are you talking about?" Elena asked, her breath hitching.

"Think about it," Vincent snarled, pacing across the balcony like a caged beast. "How did Julian manage to fake his death twelve years ago? Not with local mob money. Not with street thugs. He had state-level backing. Intelligence agencies. People high up in the government who wanted a private army in New York to do the dirty work they couldn't touch legally."

Elena’s face paled further as the staggering conspiracy unraveled before her eyes. "The shadow directorate... the internal oversight committee within our own intelligence division. They didn't want to take down the Syndicate—they wanted to own it."

"And now they have my brother and my nephew back," Vincent said, stopping at the edge of the balcony, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the stone railing. "They didn't rescue them to set them free. They rescued them to launch Phase Two."

Before Elena could respond, every single light inside the sprawling multi-million-dollar mansion flickered violently and then died. Total darkness.
