Chapter 7 - INTO THE LIONS' DEN

The mansion’s automated emergency generators kicked on three seconds later, bathing the interior in a sickly, amber-tinted backup glow.
Outside, the manicured lawns and private driveways below were suddenly swallowed by a massive fleet of matte-black armored SUVs that rolled silently through the security gates without triggering a single alarm. Drones buzzed overhead like angry hornets, their red laser sights painting the exterior walls of the estate.
"They didn't just come to rescue Julian," Elena said, her voice laced with deadly calm as she discarded her maid’s jacket, revealing the tactical harness strapped underneath. "They came to wipe the slate clean. Us, the evidence, the entire estate."
Vincent turned away from the balcony, walking briskly back into the master bedroom. He strode over to the oil painting of his grandfather, slammed his palm against a hidden biometric keypad behind the frame, and heard a heavy mechanical hiss.
The wall panel slid open, revealing a hidden armory carved directly into the concrete foundation of the house. Rows of assault rifles, submachine guns, tactical vests, and custom sidearms gleamed under the LED strips.
"Hope you brought your combat boots, Agent Vance," Vincent muttered darkly, grabbing a customized HK416 assault rifle and slamming a high-capacity magazine into the housing. He tossed a Glock 19 and a loaded tactical rig toward her.
Elena caught the firearm with practiced ease, checking the slide and clicking off the safety in one fluid motion. "I was hoping you’d ask."
Downstairs, the heavy front oak doors of the mansion exploded inward with a deafening blast of breaching charges. Wood splintered, metal groaned, and the heavy thud of dozens of heavily armed operatives marching into the foyer echoed up the grand staircase.
"They're coming up," Vincent said, stepping out of the master bedroom into the wide hallway, his rifle raised and locked.
"We can't hold them here indefinitely," Elena said, positioning herself beside him by the top of the grand staircase. "This house is a fortress, but it’s also a tomb if we get pinned against the back wall."
"Who said anything about getting pinned?" Vincent smirked, a dark, dangerous glint in his eye. "We’re going to hunt the hunters."
As the first wave of tactical mercenaries reached the landing of the grand staircase, raising their weapons, Vincent and Elena opened fire simultaneously.
Rat-tat-tat-tat!
The hallway erupted into a storm of gunfire, flashing muzzle blasts, and flying plaster. Two front-line mercenaries dropped instantly, tumbling backward down the marble stairs.
"Contact! Contact on the second floor!" a voice screamed from below.
Flash-bangs came flying up the stairwell in return, but Vincent and Elena were already moving, sprinting down the opposite corridor toward the private elevator shaft that led straight down to the underground escape tunnels.
However, just as they reached the elevator doors, the digital display flashed red, and the doors slammed shut permanently, locking from the inside.
A familiar, distorted voice echoed from the overhead intercom speakers throughout the mansion, dripping with cruel amusement:

"Nice try, little brother. But the house belongs to us now. There is nowhere left to run."
It was Julian.
