Chapter 2 - THE ANATOMY OF A RECKONINGThe private hospital wing looked more like a five-star hotel than a medical facility. Sunlight filtered softly through floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a warm glow over the plush furniture and soft linens. But despite the luxury, my body felt as though it had been dragged through a meat grinder.

I had seven stitches on my scalp, a severe concussion, and deep, purple contusions across my jaw and ribs. Every time I breathed, pain radiated through my chest.
Ethan had not left my bedside for forty-eight hours. He sat in a high-backed leather chair, his laptop open, his sleeves rolled up, working silently while listening to my breathing. Whenever I shifted or let out the smallest groan, he was instantly beside me, offering water, pressing his warm palm against my forehead, or holding my hand.
"How are you feeling?" he asked softly, brushing a stray lock of hair away from my bandages.
"Like I got hit by a truck driven by my own mother," I muttered, trying to force a weak smile, though my split lip made it burn.
Ethan didn't smile. His jaw tightened, a muscle ticking in his cheek. "They are in police custody. Both of them. Martin was released from the hospital yesterday after they set his shoulder. They are facing charges of aggravated assault, extortion, and attempted murder."
I closed my eyes. A heavy weight pressed down on my chest. "They won't stay in prison, Ethan. My father knows people. He has connections with the local precinct and the district attorney. He’s spent thirty years building an image of a respectable executive."
"He had connections," Ethan corrected coldly.
He picked up an iPad from the nightstand and handed it to me. The screen displayed a major financial news headline:
APEX ENGINEERING TERMINATES COO MARTIN VANCE FOLLOWING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ARREST; STOCK PLUMMETS
I stared at the screen, stunned. "You did this?"
"That was just hour one," Ethan said softly. "Your father didn't just assault my wife, Clara. He tried to destroy her dignity on the day she became a Vance. By yesterday afternoon, I acquired twenty-three percent of Apex Engineering's public shares. By this morning, I called an emergency board meeting. Martin was stripped of his title, his pension was frozen pending an audit, and his company car was towed from the police station parking lot."
I gasped. "And my mother?"
"Linda's world revolved around her social status," Ethan continued, his voice utterly flat. "She was the vice president of the Suburban Women's Charity Guild. I personally made a ten-million-dollar donation to the charity on one condition: that Linda be publicly expelled and barred from all future events. Furthermore, I purchased the mortgage on their two-story house. They don't own it anymore, Clara. I do."
I looked at Ethan, torn between awe and a creeping sense of dread. For my entire life, Martin and Linda had seemed like towering, invincible titans of cruelty. They had made me feel like an insect under a microscope. Yet, in less than forty-eight hours, Ethan had dismantled their entire existence with a few phone calls.
"What about Jake?" I asked quietly.
At the mention of my brother’s name, Ethan’s eyes darkened further. "Ah, yes. The 'future NFL star.' The golden child." Ethan leaned back, crossing his legs. "Do you know why they needed seventy-five thousand dollars so desperately, Clara?"
"They said Jake was in trouble with bad people... gambling debts?"
"That was the lie they told you to try and extort money from your trust fund," Ethan said, his tone dripping with venom. "The truth is much worse. Jake isn't just gambling. He’s been involved in an underground drag-racing and illegal betting syndicate. He owed money to a loan shark named Victor 'The Hammer' Vance—no relation to me, thankfully. But Jake didn't just owe money. He tried to pay off his debt by giving Victor access to Apex Engineering's proprietary blueprints."
My blood ran cold. "Corporate espionage?"
"Jake stole from Martin's company to pay off his debts," Ethan said. "Martin found out three days before the wedding. He tried to cover it up, but he needed seventy-five thousand dollars in liquid cash to buy back the hard drives from the loan sharks before the board realized what happened. That’s why they targeted you. They weren't trying to save Jake from a beating, Clara. They were trying to save themselves from prison."
I covered my face with my trembling hands. The sheer depth of their deception was staggering. They hadn't just come to my wedding to ask for help; they had come to bleed me dry to cover up their own golden boy’s treason.
Before I could speak, the double doors of the private room burst open.
"Get out of my way!" a voice shouted from the hallway.

A young man pushed past Ethan's security guards, breathing heavily, his clothes disheveled, his eyes wild with desperation.
It was Jake.
