Chapter 3 - THE GOLDEN BOY'S DEMISE"Clara!" Jake yelled, stumbling into the room. He looked nothing like the polished, confident athlete my parents had paraded around for years. His hair was messy, his designer jacket was stained, and deep dark circles hung beneath his bloodshot eyes.

Ethan rose from his chair in a single fluid motion. Marcus and another security guard stepped into the room, their hands instinctively moving to the inside of their jackets.
"Step back," Marcus warned, his voice hard as iron.
"Clara, please!" Jake sobbed, ignoring the guards and dropping to his knees at the foot of my hospital bed. "You have to help me! You have to talk to Ethan! You have to drop the charges against Mom and Dad!"
I looked down at my younger brother. For years, I had held onto a tiny thread of hope that Jake was innocent in all of this—that he was just a pawn wrapped up in our parents' toxic dynamic. But looking at him now, smelling the stale alcohol on his breath and seeing the sheer, selfish panic in his eyes, that thread snapped.
"Drop the charges?" I asked, my voice hoarse. "Jake, Mom hit me in the head with an iron stand. I have a concussion and seven stitches. Dad dislocated his own shoulder trying to beat me. And you want me to drop the charges?"
"They were just desperate, Clara!" Jake pleaded, reaching out to touch the bedsheets, though he pulled his hand back when Ethan glared at him. "You don't understand! Dad lost his job today! The bank froze their accounts! Men came to the house an hour ago and repossessed Dad's Mercedes! If they stay in jail, my reputation is ruined! Draft day is in three months! If the scouts find out about this, I won't get drafted!"
I stared at him, incredulous. "Your draft day? That's what you're worried about? Not whether your sister is going to suffer brain damage?"
"You're fine!" Jake snapped, his true colors flashing through his desperate facade. "You married a billionaire! Look at this room! You’re living in luxury while our family is falling apart! You always were jealous of me, Clara! You always hated that Dad loved me more! But this is taking it too far!"
The silence in the room became absolute.
Ethan took a step toward Jake. The air pressure in the room seemed to drop to zero.
"Jake," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Do you know who I am?"
Jake swallowed hard, looking up at the towering figure of my husband. "You're... you're Ethan Vance."
"I am the man who controls ninety percent of the private logistics networks in this state," Ethan said softly. "I am also the main sponsor of the university football program you currently play for."
Jake’s eyes widened in horror. "What?"
"I signed the paperwork this morning," Ethan continued, pulling a thin gold pen from his pocket and twirling it between his fingers. "I pulled all funding from the athletic department. Effective immediately, the Vance Foundation has rescinded its endorsement of your team. Furthermore, I had a brief conversation with the head coach and the athletic director. They were very interested to learn about your recent activities with Victor Vance and the illegal betting ring."
Jake’s face drained of all color. "No... no, you can't do that... Coach wouldn't..."
"You have been officially expelled from the university, Jake," Ethan announced pitilessly. "Your athletic scholarship is revoked. Your NFL eligibility is destroyed. You will never set foot on a professional football field for as long as you live."
"You ruined my life!" Jake screamed, scrambling to his feet, his fist raised as if he was going to lunge at Ethan. "You bastard! I'll kill you!"
Before Jake could even throw a punch, Marcus stepped in. With a swift, practiced movement, Marcus grabbed Jake’s wrist, twisted his arm behind his back, and slammed his face against the floor.
"Ahhhh! My arm! You're breaking my arm!" Jake shrieked.
"Consider yourself lucky he's only holding you down," Ethan said coldly, looking down at the disgraced golden boy. "Because if I handle you myself, you won't walk out of here."
Ethan turned his gaze back to me. "Clara... it's your choice. Do you want him arrested for trespassing and assault, or should we let him wander the streets until Victor’s collection agents find him?"
I looked at my brother—the boy who had been given everything, who had swallowed all the love in our home and left me with nothing but cold crumbs. He was weeping now, blowing snot onto the expensive hospital floor, begging for the very mercy he had never once offered me.
"Let him go," I said softly.

Jake looked up, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. "Clara... thank you—"
"Let him go," I repeated, my voice turning to steel as I looked him dead in the eye. "Let him go out there into the real world with no money, no degree, no football, and no parents to protect him. Let him see what it feels like to be background."
