Chapter 5 - THE BLUE FOLDERThe heavy mahogany door to Ethan’s study was locked, as always, with a biometric keypad. But beside the thumbprint scanner was a manual pin pad.

With trembling fingers, I tapped in the digits: 0 - 8 - 0 - 4. August 4th. My birthday.
BEEP. CLICK.
The heavy lock disengaged. The door swung open with a slow, agonizing groan.
The study was dark, smelling of expensive leather, aged scotch, and tobacco. I stepped inside, my heart lodging in my throat. I walked over to the massive executive desk. Behind a painting on the wall, just as Linda had described, was a heavy steel wall safe.
I approached it. My hands were shaking so violently I could barely function. I entered the code again: 0804.
The safe clicked open.
Inside were stack upon stack of bearer bonds, stacks of foreign currency, and a single, thick, navy-blue leather folder.
I pulled the folder out. Printed on the cover in gold foil were the words: PROJECT SECURED HEIR: STERLING/VANCE ESTATE AGREEMENT.
I opened it.
The first page was a private investigator’s report dated three years ago—a full year before I ever met Ethan at that gallery. It contained detailed photographs of me: me walking to my job at the coffee shop, me sitting in my college classes, me eating dinner alone in my tiny apartment.
Attached to the photos was a lineage chart. At the top was Thomas Sterling. Branching down was my father, Martin. And at the bottom, highlighted in bright yellow ink, was my name: Clara Sterling-Vance.
I flipped through the pages, my eyes scanning the dense legal jargon.
"Clause 4.2: In the event of marriage between Ethan Vance and Clara Sterling, all mineral and land rights associated with the Northern Basin shall automatically consolidate under Vance Global Logistics..."
"Clause 9.1: To ensure maximum cooperation, target’s familial support system must be systematically severed to rely entirely on Primary Security (Ethan Vance)..."
A cold, icy numbness washed over me, swallowing me whole.
It was all a game.
The chance meeting at the art gallery. The romantic dinners. The sudden, overwhelming affection. The protection. The way he had destroyed my parents—it wasn't just out of love for me. It was a calculated, brilliant, ruthless corporate takeover. He had isolated me from my family, destroyed my remaining support systems, and made himself my sole savior, all so I would sign the marriage certificate that handed him a multi-billion-dollar energy empire.
"You shouldn't be in here, Clara."
I jumped, dropping the folder. The papers scattered across the floor like fallen leaves.
Ethan was standing in the doorway.
May you like
He had taken off his suit jacket, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar. He looked at the papers on the floor, then looked up at me. His face was entirely devoid of emotion—no panic, no guilt, no fear. Just the cold, sharp gaze of a predator who had finally been caught in his own lair.
"Is it true?" I whispered, tears blinding my vision. "Was any of it real? Did you ever love me, or was I just a corporate asset to be acquired?"
