Chapter 6 - THE ARCHITECT'S CONFESSIONEthan stepped into the room, closing the heavy mahogany door behind him. He didn't rush to apologize. He walked over to the bar cart, poured himself two fingers of dark amber whiskey, and swirled the glass, watching the ice cubes clink against the crystal.

"Your father is a pathetic, greedy worm," Ethan said quietly, taking a slow sip. "And your mother is a narcissistic monster. They treated you like garbage for twenty-four years, Clara. I didn't make them do that. They did that all on their own."

"Answer the question!" I screamed, my voice echoing off the walls of the study. "Did you plan this? Did you target me?"

Ethan set his glass down on the desk with a sharp clack. He looked me dead in the eye, his expression unreadable.

"Yes," he said plainly.

The word hit me like a physical blow. I stumbled back against the bookcase, clutching my chest.

"Three years ago, my legal team discovered the loophole in the Northern Basin land deeds," Ethan explained, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of any regret. "Your grandfather, Thomas Sterling, was swindled out of his share by my father decades ago. But Thomas put a dead-man's trigger in the land rights. If his bloodline was ever extinguished, or if his bloodline married into the Vance family, the mineral rights would legally merge. If neither happened, the rights would revert to the state, shutting down my pipeline and costing my company four billion dollars."

"So you stalked me," I whispered, disgust dripping from my words. "You hunted me down."

"I investigated you," Ethan corrected coldly. "I wanted to see what kind of person Thomas Sterling’s granddaughter was. I expected a spoiled, greedy socialite like your brother. I expected someone who would try to squeeze me for millions."

He stepped closer to me. I shrank back, but he stopped just a foot away, reaching out as if to touch my face, though he pulled his hand back when I flinched.

"But I didn't find a spoiled socialite," Ethan said softly, his voice wavering with a sudden, rare crack of genuine emotion. "I found a girl who worked three jobs to pay her own way. A girl who drew beautiful, warm spaces because her own home was cold and lifeless. A girl who was so hurt by her own parents that she apologized every time she asked for a glass of water."

"Don't do that," I sobbed. "Don't pretend you care about me!"

"I do care about you, Clara!" Ethan snapped, his cold mask finally shattering, his eyes blazing with intense passion. "Did I approach you for business? Yes! Did I orchestrate our meeting? Yes! But falling in love with you wasn't part of the plan! Watching your father slap you, watching your mother hit you with that iron stand—that wasn't part of the plan! I was going to buy your parents off, pay them to leave the country! But when I saw you lying on that floor covered in blood..."

Ethan grabbed my shoulders, pulling me close. His breath was hot against my skin, his chest heaving.

"When I saw what they did to you, I didn't care about the pipeline anymore," he hissed, his grip tight yet gentle. "I wanted to tear their world apart because they hurt my wife. Everything I did to Martin, everything I did to Linda, everything I did to Jake—I did it for the money at first, but I finished it because I fucking love you!"

"You're a monster," I wept, pushing against his chest with all my strength. "You're no different than them! They used me for money, and so did you!"

"I am nothing like them!" Ethan roared. "They broke you and laughed while you bled! I took you away from them, gave you everything you ever wanted, and I will spend the rest of my life protecting you!"

"I want a divorce," I whispered.

The word hung in the air like poison.

Ethan froze. The fire in his eyes slowly died, replaced by a dark, dangerous void. He released my shoulders and stepped back, smoothing down his shirt collar.

"No," he said flatly.

"You can't force me to stay with you!" I shouted.

"I don't have to force you, Clara," Ethan replied, turning his back on me and picking up his drink again. "Because as long as you are my wife, you are protected. But if you walk out that door, if you file for divorce... the Vance security detail leaves. The legal defense holding your parents in jail dissolves. And your brother's loan sharks? They'll realize that the only way to get their money back is to come after the girl who just lost her billionaire husband."

He looked back at me over his shoulder, a dark, tragic smile touching his lips.

"You're in the golden cage now, my sweet Clara. And I hold the only key."
