Chapter 3 - THE FAMILY BLEED

The revelation hung in the air like ozone before a lightning strike.
"Julian," Elena repeated, the name tasting like poison. "Your brother?"
"He wanted the shipping routes. He wanted the board seats. He knew that if I had an heir—especially a trio of them—my bloodline would be secure, and his faction within the syndicate would be permanently locked out of succession," Caden explained, his fingers curling into tight fists at his sides. "So he bought the hospital administration, paid off the coroner, and shipped my babies straight to a shadow broker. Only, the broker failed to launder them out of the country before my security net tightened, leaving them in a holding foster network until Julian tried to use them as leverage against me tonight."
"And the surrogacy?" Elena asked, her chest aching. "Why me? Why was my body chosen?"
Caden’s eyes darkened, a flash of raw humanity breaking through his stoic armor. "Because your genetic markers were clean, untraceable, and independent. Julian didn't pick you—I did. Three years ago, before any of this, my scouts flagged you as an independent donor for a private trust I was setting up for anonymous philanthropic medical grants. Julian hijacked the medical files from the clinic's database to subvert my contract, substituting his own shell corporation as the client so he could steal the children before they were even born."
Elena staggered back, the sheer scale of the betrayal making her head spin. She wasn't just a random waitress who got lucky. She was the epicenter of a civil war inside the most ruthless criminal empire in the country.
"They aren't safe here," Elena said suddenly, turning her head toward the sleeping bassinet. "If Julian knows you have them—if he knows I'm here—"
Before she could finish her sentence, the massive security monitors mounted on the far wall flickered. The perimeter lights along the cliffside access road suddenly died, plunging the entry drive into pitch blackness.
A computerized voice chimed from the security console: Perimeter breach. Sector Four. Multiple thermal signatures approaching.
Caden didn't panic. He moved with terrifying, fluid speed, drawing a heavy suppressed sidearm from a holster beneath his jacket and tossing a second, smaller piece across the table toward her.
"Can you shoot?" Caden asked, his eyes locked on the front doors.

Elena caught the heavy steel pistol out of mid-air on pure, unadulterated instinct. Her hands didn't shake anymore.
"Try me," she said.
