Chapter 9 - The Arrival of MayaTwo weeks later.

The storm had passed. The mountains outside Aspen were bathed in the brilliant, golden light of early spring, washing away the bitter cold of winter.
Inside the private maternity suite, the quiet, rhythmic breathing of newborn life filled the air.
Elena lay propped up against soft white pillows, cradling a tiny, perfect baby girl wrapped in a soft pink blanket. The baby had dark, tufty hair and peaceful, sleeping eyes, completely untouched by the cruelty of the world outside.
The door opened softly, and Evelyn stepped inside holding a single legal document and a bouquet of white roses.
“The judge just signed the final decree, Elena,” Evelyn whispered softly, walking over to inspect the baby. “You are officially, legally single. And Álvaro’s parental rights have been entirely terminated under the abandonment and felony endangerment clauses.”
Elena looked down at the tiny baby in her arms, feeling a profound, unshakeable wave of liberation wash over her soul.
“Welcome to the world, Maya Vance,” Elena whispered, kissing the top of her daughter’s head.
