Chapter 3 - THE SECRET IN THE LEDGER

Elizabeth’s breath hitched as she looked out the tinted rear window of the speeding taxi.
Behind them, a heavy black SUV with dark tinted windows pulled out from the hotel’s VIP parking lane, matching the taxi's speed perfectly. It wasn't tailing them aggressively, but it was maintaining a precise, predatory distance.
"Sir, please take the longest route to the financial district," Elizabeth told the driver, her hands trembling as she opened her laptop on her knees.
She plugged in her master flash drive. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing the encryption protocols she had set up to protect her data. She needed to look deeper into the secondary folder—the one she had downloaded from Larry’s private home office computer just forty-eight hours ago while he was out at his bachelor party.
Until now, she had only skimmed the top layers of the financial spreadsheets, focusing on the millions stolen directly from her own boutique design firm, Aura Spaces. It had been enough to make her realize her entire relationship was a transaction. But as she dug deeper into the hidden sub-directories labeled 'Project Phoenix,' the true scale of the Martinez family’s depravity began to unravel before her eyes.
The Martinez Group wasn't just experiencing a minor cash flow issue, as Larry had casually mentioned over dinner a few months ago. They were completely, utterly bankrupt.
For the past three years, Kathleen and Larry had been running a massive, high-society Ponzi scheme, taking investment funds from the very guests sitting downstairs in that ballroom and using them to pay off older debts and fund their lavish lifestyle.
But that wasn't the worst part.
As Elizabeth opened a PDF document titled 'Asset Liquidation: Elizabeth Vance,' her heart stopped.
The document was a pre-drafted legal petition, ready to be filed in court the Monday morning after their wedding. It claimed that Elizabeth was suffering from severe, debilitating clinical depression and psychological instability, making her unfit to manage her own finances or her company. It was signed by a private physician—Dr. Robert Chen—a close personal friend of Kathleen Martinez.
The plan was never just to marry her for her money.
The plan was to marry her, legally bind her assets, use Dr. Chen’s falsified medical report to declare her incompetent, and lock her away in a private sanitarium upstate while Larry and Kathleen assumed total power of attorney over her life, her company, and her father’s multi-million-dollar estate.
The moldy, ruined wedding dress Kathleen had brought into the room wasn't just an insult. It was a psychological trigger. They wanted her to scream, to cry, to break down in front of the bridesmaids and the staff so they would have immediate witnesses to her "unstable emotional state" on her wedding day.
"Oh my god," Elizabeth whispered, cold sweat breaking out across her forehead. "They weren't just trying to control me. They were trying to erase me."
Suddenly, the taxi driver slammed on the brakes.
Elizabeth was thrown forward, her laptop sliding off her lap onto the floorboard. Outside, the black SUV had accelerated, cutting sharply in front of the taxi and forcing it to a grinding halt in a quiet, industrial side street near the shipping docks.
The doors of the black SUV flew open.
Two men in sharp, dark suits stepped out. But it wasn't Larry.
It was Dr. Robert Chen himself, accompanied by an imposing man holding a medical transport clipboard.
Dr. Chen walked up to the taxi window, tapped on the glass with a clinical, chilling smile, and held up a signed piece of paper against the glass.

It was an emergency 72-hour psychiatric hold order, signed by him, stating that Elizabeth Vance was an immediate danger to herself and others following a severe psychotic episode at her wedding venue.
"Elizabeth, dear," Dr. Chen’s voice drifted through the glass. "Your fiancé is very worried about you. Please step out of the vehicle. We are here to take you to a safe place to rest."
