Chapter 5 - THE RISE OF THE EX-BRIDE

Within forty-eight hours, the high-society world of the city was completely turned on its head.
The headline on the front page of every financial newspaper read: THE RUG-PULL WEDDING: MARTINEZ EMPIRE COLLAPSES AS BRIDE EXPOSES MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD.
Elizabeth sat in the conference room of her new legal counsel, sipping black coffee. She was exhausted, dark circles under her eyes, but for the first time in seven years, she breathed deeply. Her lungs felt clear. Her mind was sharp.
"The FBI has frozen all domestic assets belonging to Martinez Group Corporation," her attorney, Marcus Vance (her father's cousin), explained, sliding a folder across the glass table. "The audio tapes you provided were devastating. But the financial ledgers? That was the silver bullet. They were running a textbook Ponzi scheme. The moment you refused to marry Larry and combine your assets, their house of cards collapsed. They didn't have the liquidity to pay off their Q2 investors."
"Where are they now?" Elizabeth asked quietly.
"Kathleen Martinez surrendered her passport yesterday afternoon. She’s currently under house arrest at her penthouse, pending formal indictment for wire fraud and conspiracy," Marcus replied with a grim smile. "But Larry... Larry is desperate. He’s trying to negotiate a plea deal. He’s offering to testify against his own mother if the DA drops the charges against him down to a misdemeanor."
Elizabeth let out a hollow laugh. Of course he is, she thought. A man who has no loyalty to his future wife certainly has no loyalty to his mother when the ship starts sinking.
"There's one more thing," Marcus added, his expression turning serious. "The board of directors at your firm, Aura Spaces, held an emergency meeting this morning. Because you successfully protected the company’s intellectual property from the Martinez takeover, your stock value has actually skyrocketed. You are being hailed as a corporate hero. But Larry still holds a 15% legacy share in your company that his father gave him years ago. He is refusing to liquidate it unless you agree to meet him face-to-face one last time."
Elizabeth looked out the window at the city skyline. Larry still thought he had a card to play. He still thought he could use her company—her life's work—to leverage her into a room where he could manipulate her, beg her, or threaten her into silence.
"He wants a meeting?" Elizabeth said, her voice dropping to that dangerous, quiet register. "Give it to him. Set it up for tomorrow morning at the Aura Spaces flagship showroom. The very place he tried to steal from me."

"Are you sure, Liz?" Marcus asked, worried. "He’s desperate. A desperate man is unstable."
"I am completely sure, Marcus. Because tomorrow, I am going to show Larry exactly what happens when you try to cage a woman who knows her own worth."
