Chapter 4 - THE COUNTER-ATTACK

Elizabeth felt a wave of sheer, icy panic wash over her, but seven years of survival had taught her one thing: when you are backed into a corner, you do not panic. You calculate.
"Lady, what's going on here? Do I need to call the cops?" the taxi driver asked, his hands shaking on the steering wheel as he looked at the imposing men blocking his car.
"Yes, call them," Elizabeth whispered rapidly, while leaning down to scoop up her laptop. "But they won't get here fast enough. Unlock the rear passenger door on the left side, away from them, on my signal."
Dr. Chen tapped on the window again, harder this time. "Elizabeth, don't make this difficult. The hotel staff already gave statements about your erratic behavior in the lobby. Your bridesmaids confirmed you were screaming about conspiracies and wiretaps. Under section 5150, I have the legal authority to detain you for your own protection."
They think they’ve won, Elizabeth thought. They think because they control the narrative, they control me.
But they forgot one vital detail. Elizabeth Vance wasn't just a designer; she was the sole daughter of Arthur Vance, one of the most brilliant forensic accountants the city had ever known before his passing. He had taught her how to build paper trails that could never be erased.
"Alright," Elizabeth called out, her voice trembling artificially to simulate defeat. "I’m opening the door. Please don't hurt me."
Dr. Chen smiled, stepping back to let her exit.
But Elizabeth didn't open the door on his side. Instead, she slammed her foot against the left door, throwing it open into the path of an oncoming city courier cyclist. The cyclist swerved with a shout, creating a sudden, chaotic distraction.
In that split second of confusion, Elizabeth didn't run down the street. She didn't try to outrun two grown men. Instead, she reached into her bag, pulled out her phone, and initiated a pre-scheduled, automated live-stream broadcast connected directly to Aura Spaces’ verified corporate Instagram and Facebook accounts—which had over half a million followers combined.
She held the phone up like a weapon, the front-facing camera capturing Dr. Chen's face in high-definition.
"We are live," Elizabeth said, her voice booming with absolute authority, completely shedding the fake fear. "Right now, five hundred thousand people are watching you, Dr. Robert Chen. They are seeing you attempt to illegally abduct me using a falsified psychiatric hold order funded by the bankrupt Martinez Group."
Dr. Chen froze. His face went instantly pale. He checked his own phone, and within three seconds, his assistant's eyes widened as alerts began pouring in.
"Turn that off!" the assistant yelled, stepping forward to grab the phone.
"Touch me, and you commit a felony on a live broadcast witnessed by thousands of citizens, including several members of the press who follow this account," Elizabeth warned, stepping out of the car, her eyes blazing with absolute fury. "The documents proving your financial collusion with Kathleen Martinez—including the fifty-thousand-dollar kickback you received last Tuesday to sign this fake medical order—have already been uploaded to a secure cloud server and shared with the District Attorney's office."
Dr. Chen stepped back, his hands shaking. "Elizabeth... you don't know what you're doing. You're destroying lives."
"No," Elizabeth said, her voice cold as steel. "I am reclaiming mine. Get out of my way."
The two men stood paralyzed, utterly defeated by the power of immediate transparency. They could fight a woman in a dark room, but they couldn't fight a woman standing in the light of absolute public scrutiny. They slowly retreated to their SUV, slammed the doors, and sped away, leaving rubber burning on the asphalt.
Elizabeth turned back to the taxi driver, who was staring at her with wide, respectful eyes.

"Take me to 455 Market Street," Elizabeth said, her adrenaline surging. "The main office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
It was time to stop running. It was time to go on the offensive.
