Chapter 6 - THE FACE-OFF AT AURA SPACES

The flagship showroom of Aura Spaces was a masterpiece of minimalist luxury. High ceilings, exposed industrial concrete, and floor-to-ceiling glass walls that overlooked the bustling heart of the design district. It was Elizabeth’s sanctuary, the physical manifestation of her talent and hard work.
When Larry arrived at 10:00 AM, he looked like a ghost of the man who had stood in the bridal suite forty-eight hours prior.
His expensive Italian suit was wrinkled. His eyes were bloodshot, surrounded by dark, hollow circles. The slicked-back, confident hair was messy, and his hands were visibly trembling as he pushed open the glass doors.
Elizabeth stood at the far end of the showroom, framed by a massive, stunning installation of raw oak and brushed steel she had designed herself. She wasn't wearing white. She was wearing a sharp, midnight-black power suit. Her hair was completely down, flowing freely, no longer pinned up to satisfy Kathleen’s standard of "traditional elegance."
"Elizabeth," Larry breathed, taking a hurried step toward her. "Thank god you agreed to see me. You have to listen to me... everything is out of control. The feds, the press... they’re twisting everything. You know me. You know I love you. I was forced into that position by my mother! She threatened to disown me if I didn't get you to wear that dress, if I didn't get you to sign those papers!"
Elizabeth stood perfectly still, watching him spin his web of lies with a detached, almost clinical interest.
"Is that why you told me to get on my knees, Larry?" she asked, her voice echoing softly in the vast showroom. "Was it your mother pointing your finger at the floor? Was it your mother who gripped my arm in the lobby until it bruised?"
Larry flinched, looking down at his feet. "I was panicked, Liz! We were facing total ruin. My mother... she built this terrifying pressure cooker our whole lives. I had to protect the family. But I never wanted to hurt you. I swear, the plan to put you in the facility... I didn't know the full extent of what Dr. Chen was writing! I thought it was just a temporary rest cure to get us through the financial audit!"
"A rest cure," Elizabeth repeated, the utter absurdity of the phrase making her shake her head. "You wanted to lock me away in an institution so you could spend my father’s money to cover up your mother's criminal financial failures."
"Please, Elizabeth," Larry cried, dropping to his knees suddenly, right there on the polished concrete floor of her showroom. He reached out, trying to grab the hem of her trousers, tears streaming down his face. "Look at me! I am begging you! Pull back the financial files. Refuse to testify. If you do, I will sign over my 15% share of Aura Spaces to you for zero dollars. I will disappear. I will leave the state. Just don't put me in prison. I can't survive in there, Liz. Please. I am on my knees for you now."
Elizabeth looked down at him.
Three hours before her wedding, he had stood over her, demanding she kneel before his mother in absolute surrender. Now, the cosmic scales of justice had tipped completely. Here he was, groveling on the floor of the empire she built, begging for a mercy he had never once shown her during their seven years together.
"Get up, Larry," Elizabeth said, her voice devoid of anger, containing only a profound, crushing pity.
"Does that mean... does that mean you'll help me?" Larry looked up, a pathetic spark of hope igniting in his eyes.
"No," Elizabeth said firmly. "It means your performance is over. And you can stand up to face the people you actually need to apologize to."
Elizabeth stepped to the side, revealing a small lapel microphone pinned to her black jacket. She reached into her pocket and tapped her phone screen.
The heavy frosted glass doors of her private office at the back of the showroom clicked open. Two federal agents stepped out, accompanied by Marcus Vance and a videographer from the state prosecutor's office who had been recording the entire admission of guilt via the showroom’s security system.

Larry’s jaw dropped. He scrambled backward on his hands and knees like a startled animal, his face turning a horrific shade of gray.
"Lawrence Martinez," the lead federal agent said, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny, corporate extortion, and witness intimidation. Stand up and place your hands behind your back."
