Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Vance Empire

By midnight, the gala was shattered, and the internet was exploding. Videos of the "Miracle at the Vance Gala" were racking up millions of views online, but Clara wasn't watching the media circus. She was sitting in the back of a black armored SUV, staring out at the rain-soaked streets of the city.

Beside her sat Arthur, her loyal butler and the only man who had remained by her side after her tragic accident.

"Ma'am, your legs..." Arthur began, his hands trembling on the steering wheel. "The doctors said your spinal cord was completely severed. How did that boy—"

"It wasn't magic, Arthur," Clara interrupted, her eyes cold. "It was nerve blocker reversal. The boy pressed an acupressure nerve cluster, but more importantly... he gave me a message my body recognized."

She looked down at the thumb drive in her hand. For five years, she had believed her paralysis was the result of a horrific car crash that killed her husband, Julian. She had believed her body was simply broken. But the boy’s words echoed in her head: Some people forget they can stand.

She plugged the drive into her encrypted laptop. A single folder appeared, titled simply: PROJECT LAZARUS.

As the files opened, Clara’s blood ran cold.

There were medical records, lab reports, and surveillance footage spanning half a decade. The documents revealed a horrific truth: Clara hadn't been paralyzed by the accident. She had been systematically poisoned every single day for five years with a rare neurotoxin disguised as her daily physical therapy medication.

And the signature on every single prescription was Dr. Marcus Kane—the chief medical officer of Vance Pharmaceuticals, and Richard’s personal doctor.

"They kept me in that chair," Clara whispered, tears of rage burning her eyes. "They didn't just take Julian. They stole my life so they could control the company shares."

Suddenly, the SUV jolted violently as a heavy black truck slammed into their rear bumper.

"Arthur!" Clara cried out, clutching the seat.

"Hold on, ma'am!" Arthur yelled, spinning the wheel as the SUV skidded across the slick pavement.

Behind them, two black vehicles were closing in, their headlights cutting through the darkness like eyes of prey. A glass window shattered as a bullet pierced the side panel of the SUV.

Richard wasn't waiting for the morning news. He was moving to eliminate her tonight.

"Turn into the alley!" Clara shouted. "The abandoned docks!"

Arthur slammed on the gas, the engine roaring as they burst through a wooden barrier and plunged into the darkened industrial district. The SUV came to a screeching halt near an empty warehouse.

"Go, Mrs. Vance! I'll draw them away!" Arthur demanded, reaching into his coat for a handgun.

"No, we stick together—"

Before she could finish, the driver-side window exploded. Strong hands reached through, violently yanking Arthur out into the rain. Clara gasped, scrambling to the passenger door, but before she could open it, the door was pulled open from the outside.

Standing in the rain, holding a silenced pistol, was Dr. Marcus Kane.

"You should have stayed in the chair, Clara," Dr. Kane said with a chilling smile. "It was much safer for you there."
